Pit bulls were responsible for 60 deaths between 1979 and 1996. The next closest was Rottweiler with 29, then German Shepard with 19, then Husky with 14, then Malamute with 12, then Dobe with 8...

100 kids were hung by miniblind strings over roughly the same period. And since the banning of PB's in many areas Rott's own the top spot. Prior to Pit Bulls Dobbys were the demons, before that, German Shepards...ect....makes one think that perhaps it's not the breed...but what do I know.

Numbers, please. I've actually seen the numbers, and they completely contradict what you say.

Yes, I know all that, thanks. Just providing some statistics, that's all. Besides, it's not the breed per say, but rather the owners and poor breeding that leads to hyper-aggressive dogs.

From 1993 to 1996, Rottweilers killed 20 people. During the same period, APBTs killed 8.

There you go. Sorry if I'm a bit defensive but I'm sick and tired of all the friggin idiots assuming to know what they cannot possibly know.

Seen those numbers too, but on the other side of that is the fact that Pit Bulls are being keps a lot less since the bannings began.

No problem. Perhaps thoughtomater has had some personal experience with APBTs that we don't know about. Being attacked or having a loved one be attacked by a particular breed would probably naturally lead to a negative impression of that breed.

The bottom line is this: ALL dogs should be considered dangerous. I don't know how many times I've heard, "Oh, my dog would NEVER do that!" BS. No matter how much you think you know your dog's mind, you do not. Heck, in 1996 a Pomeranian killed a six-week old in her crib. Dogs that are considered to be "biters" include the usual suspects, but also include Dachshunds, Chiuaua, et al. Never leave kids alone with dogs unless the kids have been trained on how to protect themselves from attack and what to do if they are attacked. Teaching them to avoid dog attacks should be right up there with not talking to strangers, IMO.

Sure, fewer dogs = fewer bites. Plus, with the demand down, disreputable breeders are less likely to gain customers.

They should be charged with attempted murder... or used as criminal bait to help train police dogs.

I have yet to see a pit bull that wasn't implicitly being wielded by its owner as a weapon. And really, there is no other honest reason to own one.

Precisely. And the reason why guns rather than living animals should be used for self defense is that the owner can exercise absolute control of a gun, whereas the same is not true of a dog.

Lotsa crazy stuff going on in Roxboro lately...I live in Durham. What's going on with that state trooper that got his girlfriend to shoot his wife? I quit subscribing to the newspapers, the Raleigh N&O and the Durham paper because I got tired of their liberal tripe...so I don't really know what's going on around here. Sometimes I prefer to keep it that way too. ha ha!
