John Robertson (post 24) gives excellent advice. (I spent years beyond years in college, getting all kinds of useless degrees, there's an art to it.)
You are in school and the teacher has given you his requirements for the class. They want you to comply. Once that is done, if they are intellectually honest at all your input into the class will be favorably looked on. Remember, the more work you do, the less they have to. I hate to say that but it is true.
If you get a flaming liberal ideologue, remember you need good grades to be able to go to college and have opportunities. We all like to be right but some "teachers" just like regurgitation in their own mode.
However, if you come to class with well-reasoned arguments and can really show the incongruities in the NYT reporting, you probably will do very well.

The Wash Times would be a great option, but they don't offer daily delivery outside the DC area. They deliver by mail but you get it a day late, but even a day late is better than the NY Time on the same day.

Use it as a platform to demonstrate to the rest of the class how biased and inaccurate the NY Times actually is - I bet you'll open some eyes.

There is nothing wrong with a study in modern liberal journalism. It sounds like you are aware of the issues. Use your understanding of current events and politics to point out the liberal bias of the paper.
If the paper is being used for study material, best to go ahead an get it. It is an opportunity to point out what you and the rest of us know.
By the way, the USAToday is not much of an alternative. The Wall Street Journal on the other hand has an excellent Opinion Journal on current political and world events.
WSJ Opinion Journal BY JAMES TARANTO
Many contributors help him out and I'm quite certain you will find material there to support your positions regarding the New York Times - Taranto often goes after them. Put it on your daily read list. Excellent daily Column.
Now, enjoy high school. It is a great time. Oh, and as we were fond of saying when I was in high school, Question Authority.

"Yeah, but then you just look like a little
@#@$##$." My dear child, if you care that an asshole thinks you are an asshole, because you avoid indoctrination to assholeness, you just might have an identity problem.
Either learn the art of the well placed arched eyebrow of the superior mind,
or hone you skills at rolling on the floor, and laughing your ass out loud.

If you subscribe to the NY Times, then taht means you will probably have to write essays based on the content of the articles. Use it as an apportunity to expose the bias of the paper... hopefully you will even get to read some of them aloud and spread conservatism to the next generation.

I agree. This may actually turn into a great learning experience. Read the paper, then discern the true from the false. Then turn it around on your prof, using facts that support it. *giggle*
That's what I liked to do in my sociology course.

Pay your dues and get over it. Just because you buy the paper doesn't mean you accept their views. Sometimes you gotta do things you don't want to do for whatever reason.

By the way, FR is probably one of your best resources. I always used to silence my liberal sister by quoting articles from the actual country of occurence.
For instance, if she started to quote me what the NYT said about Lebanon, I would just say, "Funny you should say that. I was just reading a Lebanese article the other day, and in the Beirut Times Weekly it says..."
It set her back every time. LOL

I recommend you comply but read the material critically. And if there's a discussion of the material in class, be ready to point out how it's biased or otherwise lacking (but be careful about this, it's not easy to do this well, especially on the fly).

My advice to this guy, if he actually has to get the Times, is the following: Upon receiving the first issue, raise your hand. Calmly mention to the teacher that you think there's been an error. "Sir, the opinion page seems to run from Page 1 to Section E. Is it like this in every issue? Or perhaps this is a special edition." I like that answer! Good one.
And thanks.

AP Gov't & Politics is causing you to buy the Times?
Glad I'm not taking the class in this case (of course, it isn't OFFERED at my school, but then again, just about nothing is when you think about it). I didn't get to see the whole article, but I am guessing [hoping] this predicament with the Times is unique to your school.
If it's a requirement for the course, and you're determined to still take it, then I would probably have to swallow my principles and get the paper. But I would most likely show my contempt for the NY Slimes at every opportunity I had, and promptly cancel the subscription on AP test day.
I would be thinking long and hard about having to take a class that is forcing you to get a subscription to the Times. But it's probably too late for course change now (at least at my school, you really can't change your mind), and if it isn't, I'd weigh the situation carefully.
To: sarasmom
I don't mind looking like an asshole; however, I'm not going to advocate a course of action that will get him into trouble.

School forcing me to buy NY Times, what should I do? Dropout and join the circus.
To: sdk7x7
The question is, what should I do? I am considering proposing to get USA Today or WSJ instead Not instead but along with.
You're challanging the establishment. Don't expect it to be easy. It never is. Find a paper which best expresses your point of view and your ideas of professionalism and insist that the class study both. If there are technical or financial problems involved be creative in looking for solutions. You might be surprised at the help you can get if people think you're serious, intelligent, determined, and gutsy.
To: sdk7x7
The Wash Times ...daily delivery outside the DC area. Do you have to have daily? "The Washington Times Weekly Edition" is a great recap of all the best articles, editorials and news of the week. It is subscription only, so you should be able to get it delivered. I know the advertising manager.

I agree. It sounds like you are going to have to eat sh#t my friend. Don't worry about it. It has happened to the best of us. I was young and dumb once. I took on an American History course in college and "ACED" it with a "D". I still remember all 5 test scores...69,69,69,68...and the final was a 68. I wouldn't give in to that liberal SOB and it cost me. I later took the course over with a feminazi professor and ate sh*t. I got a "A"! I was a science major, so for the most part I was buffered from all the libs in college. BUT, you can't avoid them forever. Just chalk this class up as prep course for what is to come and you'll do fine. Good luck.
To: sdk7x7
Your dead.
This lib teacher will make you AFFIRM the leftist bias in any gradeable written or verbal work.
You will be punished as a wise ass if you refute liberal premises and refuse to further expound on them.
If you rebel, you run the risk of being persecuted as a homophobe, a warmonger, a right wing nut, an extremist, intolerant, etc etc.
Ask the teacher in front of the class if the recent Times scandals, lying and inaccurate reporting will be addressed in the first class.
To: sdk7x7
Tell the teacher "If I wanted liberal crap, I'd watch CNN in study hall!"
