>>>>>>>To mention the South's toying with the idea of liberating slaves that fight in the CSA was necessary, but a scene with Jackson's black cook at his deathbed was a bit over the top.<<<<<<<
Not to mention...I don't believe that scene was in the book by Shaara.....it was a made up Hollywood thing!
To: Tank-FL
Tank, I agree that the books are better, though I've only read "Killer Angels" and "Last Full Measure," which is a doozy. I can't wait for that movie. I wonder who the director will get to play Grant? His role is going to be critical if the movie series is to have a lasting impact.

not a problem...I think I can reveiw it before ever seeing it....mindless drivel, starring two of Hollywood's darlings. Skip the movie and go out for popcorn.
Now, anyone who might want to watch some interesting passion should observe the guy who portrayed Thomas Jackson. Very moving.
To: irish guard
You may be right. Jackson did teach slave children to read and write, however, which was illegal in Virginia at the time. Jackson was from the western part of Virginia, the part that seceeded from Virginia when it seceeded from the Union, which is now the state of West Virginia. Despite how solidly democrat it is today, West Virignia had very strong anti-slavery and strong Union sentiment during the Late Unpleasantness.

Cub, there is more to it. If you are a Christian,
they are afraid of YOU, because your life, your actions betray their sinfulness that they do not want to confront!People, I'm convinced that more than anything, this is the anger and hostility that the Left has toward us. They aren't really concerned we will "build prisons for gays" or have bedroom bust-ins on sodomites. Their real issue with Christians is that simply by existing, we convict them.
If you think this too far afield, realize that Hitler said the same thing about the Jews---that it wasn't enough that they be removed. They had to be killed, because their existence was a threat to "eternal Germanity."

Sorry, I forgot to add, Stephen Lang played Stonewall.
To: theDentist
But I loved Stephen Lang as Pickett, and though he was a better Pickett than Stonewall. The trilogy will have some severe continuity problems. At least they kept Chamberlain and Hancock the same.

There was a certain formality involved at the general office level and I forget which of Lee's generals had a rather nasty habit of swearing, but it is mentioned in the book that Lee often let this person's remarks pass without comment as to the vulgarity. However, I am sure you are correct about the VMI cadet vocabulary. After all, the military is the military and grousing in the ranks is part of the program.

Who was Grant's wife related to? One of the southern generals, no?

"It is pro abortion bias."
Which means that no one who holds to the beliefs taught by their church can be appointed as judge, because they are assuming that individual could not/would not follow the law. Thus, Catholics need not apply.

If the former, it was a bad joke, if the latter, we all see who the idiot is.I admit my mistakes. I was not up on the news that was in context to the "No Catholics Need Apply". I had only heard this AM that the Episcopalians have chosen to commit suicide. I owe Irish Guard an apology. It is I, who am the idiot.

Its kind of funny, regarding recents events, to note to Robert E. Lee belonged to the Episcopal church. I wonder what he would think of it now.

Gentlemanly admissions are graciously accepted...in addition, it was I who left the "Catholics Need Not Apply" comment dangling just a bit....perhaps assuming all would understand, which was my fault. You are a kind man to reply. Thanks.

Interesting. Although more Southern-oriented with respect to the Late Unpleasantness, I found the portrayals of Chamberlin and Hancock very good. They seemed to be very decent men. My only real Army of the Potomac heros before had been Reynolds (whose timely arrival with the Iron Brigade on the first day turned a typical infantry vs. dismounted cavalry meeting engagement into a real battle, and whose death arguably prolonged the war) and Lt. Cushing, portrayed in Bruce Catton's Glory Road as lying mortally wounded at the clumb of trees calling for charges of triple canister -- now, there was a redleg!

it was arguably proof that they were wrong and that God favored the North.?????

"One particular scene stood out in my mind. Stonewall Jackson was sitting on a horse with Jim(?)Louis the black cook. I was surprised (being a northener) at Jackson's comments regarding the abolition of slavery. "
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember any black characters in the book, nor do I recall any speculations on Stonewall's feelings on slavery. I've seen the movie (read the book first), and was surprised to find these characters in the film.

Don't think so, but I vaguely recall reading a book on Longstreet that stated that either the Grants stood up for the Longstreet's wedding, or the Longstreets stood up for the Grant's wedding. They may have even stood up for each others' weddings. My old brain doesn't function all that well anymore.
