...touch-screen machines can be modified so that they print a copy of the ballot...[it is then] deposited in a locked ballot box in case a recount is requested...This is the way it should be done to prevent fraud. Aren't most of these election clerks actually Democrats? Could this be why they are so prejudiced (afraid?) of verifiable systems?

... deposited in a locked ballot box in case a recount is requested... Then the problem is who takes control of the lock box and when - obviously the same problem we have now with paper ballots. I am currently leaning towards a multiple reporting system where a local paper, and several local and national media get real-time results, trapdoor encrypted until precinct closing, while still having verified ballots printed and deposited with the voter getting a coded confirmation. The transmission could be done over the phone lines as burst compressions. As far as vote selling, allow the voter to request a printed validation of anything - vote buying made instantly worthless.
Discrepancies would show up immediately upon announcement by precinct and there would be correspondingly less time for 'bosses' to manufacture 'correct' votes. This combined with the idea of random coded receipts would potentially give greater security to a ballot.
Remember that there is a practical limitation going on here that makes security problematical. Polling places are temporary locations used VERY occasionally and are all too vulnerable. The ultimate strength of our system resides in the voters saying "NO YOU CANNOT STEAL MY VOTE!"

Check out "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast. It will blow your mind.

It would be nice if then I was presented a screen or something with my vote choices and I had to sign or input my voter number, to verify that the computer got it right. That would destroy any protection that comes from using a "secret ballot" system. Think about it - do you really want President Hillary Clinton to be able to see exactly who you voted for (or voted against) in the last election?

Not if I was the only one able to access that screen.

Then how could it be used for a recount?
Old-fashioned paper ballots are the abolsute best choice for accuracy, accountability, and secrecy. The whole Florida fiasco was nothing more than a -- very successful -- effort to make people think that paper ballots are bad, thereby paving the way for President Hillary in 2004 using fraudulent electronic balloting.
