much more difficult to administer than Linux...

To be fair, one of my former servers (before I became a cook), an Enterprise 250 (running Slowlaris), had uptimes of over 400 days before reboots caused by physical moves of the equipment, but you HAVE to pare everything down to the essentials, kill -9 vold, and stay on top of zombie processes.

And you can't let users run software that you haven't read the source code for... sheesh. Improper calls to the kernel are a large part of the problem, but Sun's own utilities are similarly afflicted.

I've rebooted this flying pig twice today.

Come to the Dark Side, LTCJ. Together, we will be stronger. Install linux, and stop the reboots....

  1:11am up 25 days, 22:48, 2 users, load average: 0.14, 0.08, 0.02

Ok, I need to set the date and time, but the last reboot was because of a power outage and no UPS.

Just to be safe, everyone should buy and install Microsoft Windows.

or the millions of anklebiters who can root Microsoft's crapware faster than

The view of those on the 'software end' of the biz who NEVER blame their hardware OR their third party drivers ...

And the view of anyone who has a lick of sense when it comes to computer and network security. :)

Do you remember when OSF stood for "oppose Sun forever?"

I remember when you could put an entire Slackware distro on 5 each 5&1/4" floppies. ;>)

Scott needs to worry less about Microsoft and the "dangers" of open source and more about his overreliance on PRC contract manufacturers and illegal sales of his hardware to the Axis of Evil. Furthermore, he needs to understand the true nature of his MCST "partnership" in Moscow and how the Kremlin has stolen his technology and sold it to the PRC. Strategic blindness....

So sad to see so many be so quick to poormouth a great American company like Sun, just so they can continue to download their supposedly free (but likely illegal) Linux made by their commie buddy from Finland.

Sun is a fine example of American enginuity, starting over 20 years ago making not only hardware but software, and charging a fair price for the security and accountability it provided.

But alas, this 'free' idea is so much better apparently, how dare any of these US software companies DARE charge us for their product? For this, they must be destroyed, shouted the mob.

Yeah! I think I had something called the SLS (softlanding linux system) which came on a Colorado tape. This was before I had a CD-ROM. I copied the files on to 5 or so on to 5 and 1/4'' floppies, and booted off the first one. Ah, memories. I think SLS was the starting point for Slackware and SuSE.

No company is perfect. Sun, IBM, and Microsoft have all does done some very boneheaded things in the past. Sun makes great hardware which is a pleasure to work on and I like Sun the best of those three compaines, but sometimes their management makes me shake my head.

It's a shame you continue to bad mouth Linux, since it is a western-world invention, not a communist invention as you like to characterize it. Linux is American and European creation, and personally I think it's American as apple pie. Just because China has jumped on the bandwagon doesn't mean Linux is a comminst plot. IBM sells mainframes to China's banking industry, are they commies too. Microsoft does plenty of business in China too. Sheesh.

I'm serious when I'd say you wouldn't bash it if you knew it better. Or if you're so inclined try BSD? Linux isn't to everyone's tastes. If you ever get into my neck of the woods drop me a line, I'll help you set up a Linux box some time. :)

I can guess who is behind "SCO," but exactly what does the acronym "SCO" stand for? (I know, I know, it's a stupid question but I ask stupid questions all the time -- what's one more?)

This man is going to drive Sun into bankruptcy.

Well, he's already got 5 billion cash, Java, and now one of the few to have a legal license to sell Linux and Unix, so that might take a while.

Much more like apple pie. And without that obscene GPL.
