"In the UK, cigarettes are known as "fags" for short."

I grew up in the 60's and we called cigarettes fags. We also called fruits, fags. I'm not at all Bloody British.

I've never heard a cigarette called a fag here where I grew up [NC].

Fire in winter only. Some of my garden home neighbors have them on cool spring and fall days so that they smell up the hood for everyone.

No problem on the prick thing, I tell people "my name is Rick the P is silent", I also say, "I'm not a hunchback, that's my azz on my shoulders." Just be cautious about a posters intent. My other replies on the thread had no tree hugging intent.

It is as much the cheap azz fireplace as it is the firestarter. Sometimes both. The Chimneys have spark arresters which slow the smoke and lessen the heat going out which makes the smoke hug the ground. People burn green hickory and oak so more smoke. I have had to go to more than one neighbor's smoke filled house to show them how to open and close the flue. If it wasn't for my love of being outside the smoke wouldn't bug me. My favorite fire is a campfire with a full moon and some good whiskey and a good woman.

I take my 9mm for snakes. Snake = Good target.

That's what I'm waiting on. The houses are all less than 5 years old. Cresote will get them all BC no one is getting the chimney cleaned.

The Straight Dope is, very uncharacteristically, obviously wrong.

The key point is the use of the term "fag" in British schools to denote an underclassman who did chores for an upperclassman. As these schools were also hotbeds of homosexuality, the upperclassmen often required more intimate favors from the underclassman assigned to serve him. It is easy to see how the meaning of the word changed, in the usage of outside observers of the school system for whom the homosexuality was the most striking feature.

Even with the higher property tax rate I'd be shelling out less total than I am in California, with my $350,000 assessed value, $480,000 market value home on a postage-stamp lot here in San Jose.

Air around it could hold seven times more dioxins than allowed for incinerator chimneys.

The same could be said about about the French...
