Considering that some intelligence folks are talking about a new round of airplane attacks, it's just so governmental that pilots with military experience aren't being allowed to carry.

I hear you, loud and clear.

On second thought, many of those pilots who were a part of the mass exodus from the military in the late 90s (saving you from the "Clinton decimated our military and the morale therein" soapbox), transferring flying skills over to the airlines, are furloughed, since 9-11. Dh is one of the lucky ones still employed. He still serves in the Reserves.
