The lady had an unusual ailment or condition which caused a constant and prolific watering of her eyes. She carried a large box of Kleenex with her wherever she went, and the recording studios where she was booked always had plenty on hand. She was said to have been very gracious and easy to work with. There was at least one Guinness World Book issue that had her as the most successful recording artist in the world.

Why couldn't it have been the moron who came up with the obnoxious three shrill tones prior to the message that the number you have called cannot be completed as dialed.

And along the same lines, how is it going to help to "check the number and dial again"? If it didn't work the first time, does "checking" it somehow make it work the second time?

I believe I met the lady with my Boy Scout Troop about three weeks ago.....At a retirement community (extended care)here in Roswell called Chambrell....

I Took the troop there just before the 4th for community service....they visited most of the "seasoned citizens" there....It not only brightened the seniors day...but my scouts were really pumped up afterward...

May she rest in peace...

No kidding!! I hate that noise. Who was the supergenius that decided that needed to be the most obnoxious noise known to man?

Fax machine tones can be quite annoying too when they come in your voice line from an auto-dialer. Couldn't the fax industry have come up with something a little more soothing?

Actually, post 15 was a hidden Seinfeld reference that MotleyGirl will pick up on.

ELAINE: Hey, Kramer, what was it you were having faxed to my house every 30 seconds?

KRAMER: Well, I signed up for a food delivery service. You know, they're faxing me the menus from some restaurants.

ELAINE: So this is never gonna stop?

KRAMER: Well, it better not. Can I pick up my messages?

ELAINE: You can pick 'em up right now. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

My mother heard one of those recordings once (she misdialed) and asked me later who was the "girl" who answered my phone.

My answering machine screens most of my calls and these auto-dialers don't always hang up in a timely fashion so, when I clear my messages, I often hear her dulcet tones:

"If you'd like to make a call, please hang up and try your call again. If you need help, hang up and then dial your operator."

My parrot practically has this memorized.

I'm guessing that within ten years, her voice will be replaced by something that sounds more ethnic.

in the Sixities when I worked for a recording company we used to go to a small trophy company in Hollywood to have framed "gold records" made for the latest sensation. The rumor was that there was by far more gold Elvis records than anyone...it was typical for the labels to have thousands and thousands of Elvis overruns and every so often the trophy company would go and buy em up to make the "gold records"...
