Could it possibly be that the drop in crime rate is because of the number of people in prison?
I liberal could never think that way.

Shouldn't the title read:
Crime drop plummets because criminals are in jail.

"Despite" is a word indicating that the author has reasoned his own way to a headline. Unfortunately, he's reasoned the wrong way.

Not if you are a liberal and cannot see the connection. Read "BIAS".

Maybe the crime rate is down because a larger number of the bad guys are in the tank. If the cost per prisoner is too high, I have several great budget cutting ideas...2 meals per day, no free computer/internet access, and require inmates to work to earn money and help pay towards their room and board. Any fruits of their crimes (money from drug dealing, etc.) be seized and put towards their imprisonment costs.

You mean, Clinton's been incarcerated? ;)
To: nwrep
Here's how a rat thinks: "Wow, man . . . The murder rate has fallen a fraction of a percent, man . . . So how come we're still locking up murderers, man? . . . New murderers should be given a pass, man . . . They shouldn't be locked up, too, man . . . Locking up all the old murderers is good enough, man . . . It's racist, too, man . . . Pass me that doobie, man . . ."

Or:

"Dave's not here, man."
"No, I'm Dave."
"Huh? Sorry man, Dave's not here."
"No man, it's me, Dave. I'm right here. Let me in."
"Sorry, man, Dave's out right now. Maybe you should come back later, man."

A common drug abuser who doesn't work, needs tens of thousands of $$$ per year to support him and his habit. Where does he get this money? You can bet he ends up costing society much more than the $20K per year to incarcerate him.

"The way to reduce prison spending is to reduce the number of people in prison..."
What pisses me off, this guy probably gets a paycheck for saying stuff like that. Ultimately, crime doesn't bother them, just the number of criminals locked up, apparently.
To: nwrep
Wow. The writer sure did go to some length to get a DIVERSITY of opinions on this topic:
* "...said Will Harrell, executive director of the
Texas American Civil Liberties Union" * "...according to
The Sentencing Project, a nonprofit organization that promotes alternatives to prison."
* "...said Jason Zeidenberg, director of policy and research for the
Justice Policy Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on ending reliance on incarceration."
* "
Prison alternative advocates..."
* "...said Rose Braz, director of
Critical Resistance, a California-based group opposed to prison expansion."
Can you say...
It's Not Just A Gun...It's My "HOMELAND DEFENSE RIFLE"!!

And who's that cellmate? Looks like Mandella, but it's hard to say...too much music in the background. I wonder what they're playing.
