Piffle. The reason socialism has succeeded in America is because that is what a majority of American's command.
Ray Malone put it this way:
"Freedom is the ability of a nation to embrace socialism to any extent the people desire as long as people are free to throw it out and put in total capitalism any time the voters choose. Government of the people, by the people, and for the people is a government that does whatever the people want...even if that is socialist."
That is why we have more funding for education, farms, and a prescription drug plan. That is also why we have a Dept of Homeland Security. That is also why Dubya will win re-election by a landslide... Dubya is doing what that people want as all good public servants should.
I dont like socialism anymore than you do, but I understand we got to this point incrementally and it will take incremental steps to wean America off its dependence for government assistance. America will not, and never has tolerated instant change.
You are having a problem with the concept of freedom and the will of the American people. You seem to want Dubya to not do what the people want, but to do only what YOU want. That will not happen, for if it did, we would not have freedom but instead a dictatorship. In America you must convince the masses to make real change. If you can convince a majority of people that what you want is good then both parties will rush to give it to you. Witness the prescription drug plan that Dubya HAD TO sign and the welfare reform Clinton HAD TO sign. The people get what the majority wants. If the elected politicians dont give the voters what the voters want then they do not get re-elected. Ours may not be the best form of government, but it is the best man has come up with so far. Many far right whiners yearn for a strong dictator to ignore the will of the American people. I dont always agree with the majority but like Dubya I trust the American people.
Don't trust the professional pessimists. Trust the American people. - Ronald Reagan Oct 1, 1984
