AmeriKa was also sympathetic to the USSR. It also had the USSR winning and the USA disappearing from the world.

Bill Murry, (whom I am not really fond of as an actor) is what made the first movie work. He added the absurd glue to the absurd parts.

The new movie only had "stay away" plastered in their promos.

Interesting -- I guess it could be seen as anti-American and pro-Soviet to indicate that They would win, though They were definitely the bad guys in the movie (along with the collaborators). The director of the series was pretty far left in the 60's but had gotten wise and outgrown that by the time the series was made, in the 80's. (He was my 9th grade English teacher's husband!)
