Unfortunately, the new heterodox style manuals being used by newspaper editors (! -- since when did they become the keepers of English?! <snort>) are resetting the benchmarks of grammar, as they deliberately deracinate e.g. strong verbs and the comparison of adjectives and baptize after-the-fact the solecism of split infinitives, citing the grumpy authority of Winston Churchill, worn down by wartime cares and lubricated by good cognac, replying to a correction by one of his proofreaders: "This is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put!"

There is a grotesque, laughable expectation by certain people that they will be accorded the special right not to be offended. I heard the student on Larry Elder's show the other day, and a caller stated, like it was the most commonsensical, obvious thing, that the white student should have asked the opinion of some black students re: the book before he put up his poster. Larry was too polite to say "Hey, Yo! Your village is calling! They miss you!"
