I hope you don't mind, Dane. I seriously couldn't resist. In all seriousness though, while I don't agree with you 100%, you have brought up some pretty good points on this thread. Even though I won't automatically jump down someone's throat when they criticise Bush, I've noticed in the last few days that there are some trolls (who will go unmentioned) who seem to be wanting to just start arguments as opposed to facilitating real discussion, and thow out the "Bush is a socialist" line with no intention of defending their position in clean debate.
No, but the guy refused to close his business, too!
Well, then, that explains why Reagan said of the Earned Income Tax Credit:
"It is the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress."
-Ronald Reagan
The relevant comparison is spending under Clinton with a GOP legislature, which grew more slowly, even setting aside defense spending, than it has under Bush.
Actually, I think spending grew more slowly under Clinton because he did 'set aside defense spending' - and I believe part of the reason it's growing again under Bush (and one reason it grew so quickly under Reagan) is that both Bush & Reagan put high priorities on defense spending.
By the way, I notice that I had addressed this line of argument to TLBSHOW, in response to something he said, and he's yet to answer me. Wonder why?
It's quite alright, this has all been more amusing than is usually expected.
In any case, I've realized that you've made a serious contribution to logical theory on this thread, that is, the epitomization of a particlar type of reasoning...
Argumentum ad felinem.
When it occurs to me, I'll rember to call it "The Danish Fallacy."
Regards,
Actually, I think spending grew more slowly under Clinton because he did 'set aside defense spending' - and I believe part of the reason it's growing again under Bush (and one reason it grew so quickly under Reagan) is that both Bush & Reagan put high priorities on defense spending. No, that's explained by the fact that Reagan, like Bush, is fallible, and capable of doing and saying dumb things.
I'd be curious to know why he said that, and the underlying circumstances. Did he know he was polishing a turd? Maybe, I don't know.
The main point, though, about Reagan's budgets still stands. He never had the advantage of a GOP controlled legislature.
By the way, I notice that I had addressed this line of argument to TLBSHOW, in response to something he said, and he's yet to answer me. Wonder why? It's true that Clinton tried to hide government growth by slashing the military, and that Bush's spending increases are partly accounted for by the necessary rebuilding of our military.
It's also true that setting aside the military, the growth of government spending is increasing faster under Bush than under Clinton. Not because of Clinton's discipline, but because the GOP House and Senate were more fiscally restrained in the 90s than they are under Bush.
Dunno, and I'm not sure it matters. Your question was answered.
In other words, both Bush and Reagan did some things conservatives don't like.
Thanks, that was my point.
Ummm, you know, we can all look at your latest comments....
But don't worry about it, that's a good place for you to be. Carry on.
Thanks, that was my point.
Great, and it doesn't stop there. Reagan signed an amnesty for Illegals, and a big tax increase for a meaningless handshake promise with the Democrats for spending cuts down the road.
Simply asking "did Reagan ever make mistakes?" would serve the purpose. Getting into questions about budgets where Reagan didn't have a GOP House diverts attention from that point.
Since, however, we're in agreement that not everything Bush does will necessarily be something conservatives will like, he may in fact, be flat out wrong on occasion. Right?
LOL!
It sure isn't unless we all get together and demand that Bush stop his pandering for BIG GOVT.
as Reagan said
Govt is the Problem not the solution.

Exactly. And we've established now that Reagan, who thought that 'government was the problem, not the solution', nonetheless supported a large increase in the EITC, and "signed an amnesty for Illegals, and a big tax increase..."
In fact, several of the things Bush is being crucified for here are things that Reagan also did - yet Reagan is still considered a conservative hero.
Odd, isn't it?
Perhaps an updated image to reflect the REAL sabertooth is in order. Yeah.....THAT'S the ticket!
