I am so happy I am one of the 2% I am only 15 and i figured it out althought it took me a long time but it's ok. I can live with that. Way to go Simran......... :)

I think the whole thing is a trick to make the point that if you begin an endeavor with unwarrented assumptions, your experiment, no matter how flawlessly executed, will yield no meaningful results. The puzzle never mentions that anyone keeps fish. And since cats and dogs are both members of the same family of mammals, that leaves open the possibility that the unmentioned type of pet could be any species of mammal, bird, fish, insect or whatever. You can spend all day creating nice graphs, but it's all a waste of time, because the answer is that there is no answer.
