Tehcnically Americorps is not called that any more, it's called "Freedom Corps" now. Soon to be renamed "French Corps"? Now that W kissed and made up with Chirac? (LOL)

"By the way, does Rush know how you feel about him? And how do you afford all those candles you light at his shrine in your living room?" Back when the Large One was still cutting edge, I really did that as a gag for my best (liberal) friend and his wife.
It was a hoot!

They were raised. Bush raised tariffs on lumber and steel. Tariffs are federal taxes. Everything you buy thats made of wood or steel costs more now. These taxes are huge compared to the puny cuts.

W. is better than Gore only in a matter of degree. That difference is getting smaller and smaller. Some will take that agreement as being a betrayal of conservative values because we do not worship GWB because he has an "R" as his party label. Some will take that as a betrayal of conservative values becuase we have not said we will vote for someone else and have given up on him.
A sad situation.

Our votes will cease to matter since there will be no viable policy alternatives on which to vote. I'm afraid it happened already. I believe many on this thread keep themselves busy trying to convince themselves that W is 'better' than Gore. It's getting harder every day.

Why give up on him now? Why not try to turn him around?

In fairness - as you can see, I am making friends on all sides - not EVERYTHING that's made of wood and steel costs more now. Not if they're made in the U.S.A. Imposing some puny/tiny trariffs after noticing that certain nations were practicing dumping is one of the very few decisions W made that I agree with.
But... this topic too deserves its own thread.
So... for the record, I do support W imposing tariffs on foreign steel and wood. I wish he imposed more.

What great tax increases? What in the heck are you talking about? Didn't you remember how he's recently tried to pass two big tax cuts, and some people in there wouldn't let him? What's the matter with you? You're not going to get away with that junk with me! He took what tax cut he could get away with, and I and many others will too! (Good grief! And I thought I'd heard everything!)

Not if they're made in the U.S.A.
Steel and wood cost more because domestic steel and wood don't have to compete with cheeper imports. Even if the item is made here and the material costs more either the customer pays more or the company makes less profit and their stock goes down.
Even if you agree that tariffs are a good way to tax how can you support raising taxes in a ressession?

Don't you remember his raising tariffs on lumber and steel? Or don't you know that tariffs are taxes?

Kissed and made up with Chirac!! (hahahahaha...another funny one!) Where did you get that one from? The next thing you'll say is that he had Chirac over at Prairie Chapel! Keep going now, these little tall tales are funnier and funnier as they evolve! Don't disappoint us now! We just love your little stories, it keeps you, and the other Bush-bashers so contented!

You are wrong! Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction -even Hans Blix said so! There is no evidence to support the claim by the Iraqi scientists that the weapons were destroyed. The weapons didn't just evaporate into thin air. Those weapons went somewhere. Let's just hope that those weapons don't turn up in another 9/11 style attack! The war in Iraq was completely justified -period!

I was I believe saying that I had not yet given up on him. My OPIC threads are an attempt to get him to address a particular issue that he needs to address that could prove vital to his re-election. Had Al Gore won the ability of the White House to possibly affect the Congressional elections in 2002 id unknowable. I supported GWB in 2000 and am awaiting events to determine my support in 2004. It will be either I support GWB or sit out an election which I am in general loathe to do. It depends on GWB's positions on issues over the next months until teh election how entusiastic that support will be. If he were to sign an AWB extension or support soem otehr Democrat initiatives I would find t very hard to vote for him. However, i also am a political realist who realize that sometimnes one has to give in one place to gain in another.

I am not a tax expert, but aren't tariffs taxes on imports? If imported lumber and steel means I have to pay more for them, wouldn't that encourage me to buy more of our own lumber and steel? Wouldn't that boost our own country's lumber and steel companies production, the very companies the greenies have been trying to get shut down for years? Do you suppose greenies buy much lumber and steel?
Please continue, educate me. Unfortunately I do not have time to stay here and finish this with you now, but I will try to return to read more later.
This author would have been better to have included more specifics into his piece instead of just broad brush sweeping generalizations, imo. There is much to be learned from discussion of the specifics. When the author's entire piece is presented as one sweeping generalization about how bad Bush is and how most Bush supporters are blind voters, why would anyone, especially mainstream conservatives, want to bother to respond?
To: Destructor
I said it was justified. I supported it for 12 years. However, plenty of nations have WMDs should we go to war with all of them?
The war was never finished in 1991. It needed to be finished whether they had WMD or not.

"Next you will tell me we had to start these wars because Saddam was about to get in his canoe and cross the Atlantic with Weapons of Mass Destruction."
"By the way, where are those WMDs?"
Don't worry the weapons will turn up! Either American troops will find the weapons buried in the desert, or the weapons will be used against the U.S. in a Sept. 11th style attack! The one certainty is that the weapons will turn up, and you will eat a big helping of crow!
