OK, old thread. Looked like it was contemporary.

"The organization is there. The platform is there. The winning candidates are there. The dollars to run winning campaigns are there. The momentum is there. And the vast majority of the conservative voters are there."

We've fallen a long way since June, 2003 when this was posted. The organization is crumbling. The platform is all but ignored. The candidates are no longer conservative and no longer winning. The dollars for winning elections have dried up. The momentum has fizzled. And the vast majority of conservative voters, don't.

Funny what happens when conservatism takes a back seat to pragmatism. And I was part of that too. Thought it was worthwhile as long as we were able to hold onto the White House and the congressional majority so "our" side could control the committees, control the agenda, and control the appointing and confirmation of the judges.

All that changed after the election debacle of 2006. And, unfortunately, it now appears that 2006 was only the beginning.

I was reading some historical articles about him the other day.
I learned he had tried to commit suicide multiple times while a POW.

I would not blame him for that, but I do think his experiences
probably caused some of the instability we see to day.

The left will have a field day with him, unless he has the goods on Hillary.
Then they will both remain silent and we all lose.

If the vast majority of the FReepers want it so, then Free Republic will officially become the newest “Republican wing” of the Republican Party.”

I wouldn’t want it. Right now we are free to discuss anything we care to and we do a super job of pissing off the liberals.

Why fix it if it ain’t broke?

Institute a three whine rule or something like that.

"So we become a little more liberal - so what?"

A shining example of why we are where we are with the choice of candidates today. No thanks.

Jim,

I couldn’t possibly agree more with your post.

The “third party” gambit is a sucker bet, and I am always immediately suspicious of anybody who comes here and pushes that theme. There is nothing the rats like more than “third-parties” - - especially ever since Ross Perot gave America Bill Clinton. (Of course, the Greens may have taken one away from Algore, but there you go - - third parties are strictly spoilers in this day and age.)

We genuine conservatives need to redouble our efforts to take back OUR party.

FRegards,
LH

Keep your site a conservative one JimRob. We need to keep RINOs and broken glass Republicans at bay with principled opposition.

As long as women are allowed to vote, the left will never be defeated and as a side note..as long as women are allowed to use the internet, we will continue to receive chain letters.

From The FR Home Page

Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

I don't see anything on the home page about FR being a republican site. I see the word conservatism mentioned twice in that paragraph.

I'm a Conservative first and foremost.
If the republican party ceases to be conservative (and these days a good case might be made) then I'm not a republican but I'll remain a conservative.
And
That's that.

Eagles Up!

For whatever it's worth Jim, the draw of FreeRepublic WAY BACK WHEN in 1997 was that this was NOT affiliated with the Republican party. FreeRepublic is based on principles, not party membership. That is what makes your site so good. Even though I am a registered Republican (so far), that is not what defines my politics. Conservatism does.

Don't change it Jim .... please don't.

it also gives me the willies. (Not that he'd drop the Big One but that he's going to blow himself up on the campaign trail.)

Imo that would be a most promising development if it happens before the convention. ....long before, preferably.

WE have 2 battles

1 is to keep the likes of Obama and Clinton out of the white house.

2 is to fight against the problems of the left side in the GOP.

If we give the white house to the Democrats because we don’t pick the right fight to wage first, what good have we done for our country?

The third party option has never ever ever won in this nation...but if we want to reform the GOP the time do to it is after we defeat the dems, not before the election.

They would sure love us if we did. Might as well cast our ballots for Obama.

My piece. I’ve been laying low during all the infighting cause it was such an exercise in futility. But now the writing is on the wall, and I know who the enemy is and I will do what I can to defeat him and/or her.
