My 70 year old dad (twice divorced, third wife died) is leaving this evening for a trip to Hong Kong to meet a woman he "met" on the Internet. He says that SARS is "over" in Hong Kong. The woman is from somewhere on mainland China.
The odds are in his favor, but talk about the triumph of hope over experience!
Oh, well, I hope he has a really good time.

Your quotes from Dr. Niman are an outstanding catch. Thanks for more of your great work.
So what does "widespread" mean when Dr. Niman says, "I suspect that the virus is quite widespread in the Toronto area by now.."?
Given the widely suspected seasonal nature of SARS, the exact definition of "widespread" may not matter. All it takes is too be widely disseminated enough to pop up in many places in Toronto, essentially all at once, when the flu & cold season starts.

"The only thing "weird" about the Toronto PCR data is the failure to recognize the data for what it is, a measurement of SARS CoV infections, which continue to silently spread as officials attempt to find excuses for "weird" results." Talk about a 'slap-down.'

""If we don't come up with a reasonable explanation as to why this occurred, they might be more worried and they might slap us with a travel advisory," he said. "I don't know if a travel advisory means anything, though, because nobody is coming to Toronto anyway." Okay, you've lost the PR battle now, can you go fix the problem?

From your link:
However, in a set of new frustrations Wednesday, [Ontario health officials] said they are now concerned about two other long-term care facilities. Public health workers were alerted Tuesday evening that some patients at Fairview Lodge in and Colonial Retirement Home -- both located in Whitby -- were experiencing respiratory difficulties.
