Foley does, indeed, have a record of voting for "gay rights". The only think he didn't vote the gay position on is the Defense of Marriage Act. Everything else: gay gay gay.

Foley did lots of good things in the post-election 2000 in Florida. Few people are more responsible than he is for Bush being president. (He also answered my e-mails to him at the time.)

I keep bringing Bronson up because I have real trouble coming up with a candidate I think can be both competitive and a have a decent record once elected. Sorry to sound like a broken record but Bronson looks to me like the only Republican who fills the bill.

That's fair, and I agree that Bronson would be a great candidate. Unfortunately so many good candidates are taking a pass on this one.

However, that same gratitude is not reciprocated - despite the fact that the social conservatives represent a numeric minority in the party, but have disproportionate control over candidate selection and platform writing over the volume of the noise.

I agree his stands on abortion do not fully reflect mine. OTOH, his opponent in the election, if he is the nominee, will be much more to the left of Foley.

There are degrees of righteousness, and MF is closer than, say, a Janet Reno would be.

If a candidate like Foley is running and the opponent is to the _left_ of him, he'll get my vote. Period. Being that Foley is from, what, Palm Beach County Florida--where liberals abound? I'd be grateful to be from there and have someone as close to being a strong conservative as he is.

I have several friends who live in the Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce area, and they certainly agree with you. Foley's staff is professional and responsive. I've watched Foley on t.v., and he is an articulate supporter of GWB's policies.

McCollum is without a doubt one of the most boring individuals on the planet, and a terrible campaigner to boot. I don't believe FL Republicans are silly enough to give him another shot when there's so much riding on the outcome.

When was the last time you heard Dems say anything about sexual orientation of a candidate post primary? You don't, even in conservative states.

Remember the 2000 election? Florida is NOT a conservative state! While North Florida and SW Florida are very conservative, and Central Florida is largely conservative (once you get away from the larger cities), South Florida is solidly socialist (with the exception of the Cuban exiles, but they are WAY outnumbered). And those three counties that make up S. Florida comprise 1/3 of the state population. Florida is as much of a toss-up state today as it was in 2000 - the only reason the Republicans so thoroughly dominate the state government is that the Rats here are so inept (think CA Repubs).

Another tidbit from the 2000 election - in the waning days of the campaign, the Gorons, sweating the bite that Ralph Nader was poised to take out of the dumb and lazy and dead voting blocs, started spreading rumors that Nader was gay. So yes, Rats are certainly capable of pulling this kind of garbage, and why shouldn't they be? They know the media will never call them on the staggering hypocrisy of it.

Florida needs a real candidate.

Amen - as dominant as the state GOP is in Florida, the lack of a viable US Senate candidate is far and away the most glaring weakness we have. McCollum had his chance - with all the strength of the Repubs coupled with the weakness of the Rats, he should have won the 2000 Senate race in a walk. Instead, he proved to be as exciting on the stump as watching paint dry, and never even made a respectable showing. McCollum needs to sit down and shut up - the last thing we need is an Al Gore knockoff.

I hope the GOP primary will not be nasty. If Foley loses to Weldon, the media shall complain about the GOP being a haven for hateful bigots (Not voting for a gay candidate is homophobic). Foley supporters may well vote for the RAT candidate just to stick it to the "fundies". On the other hand, if Foley wins the primary, the "religious right" may refuse to vote for Foley just to stick it to the "Godless RINOS". Also, consider the fact that the FL primaries are held in September. This means the primary winner has little time to raise money and introduce himself to the general public. These are factors everyone should consider in the FL Senate race.
