These are insightful notes from the book you recommend

---It's fairly common for a suicidal person to not show outward signs of severe despair/depression prior to committing suicide. In fact, once the decision to commit suicide has been made, a depressed person may perk up and seem more positive and cheerful.
---A suicidal person goes into a tunnel-visioned mode which keeps them from anticipating the consequences of what they're going to do. All they think about is how killing themselves is the only "solution" to their problem, period.

Another thing to consider is that the suicidal person thinks that he is in some way "special" or weird and feels things more deeply than others do in the same situation and that no one could possibly understand the depths of his anguish or the wisdom of his solution, so he keeps it inside. It is a form of pride, this refusal to humbly confess the weakness within and accept counsel. Therefore, when he (or she) commits the final act, he does not realize that he will be causing such horrible pain to the people left behind, because he does not think they are capable of feeling to his level.

Ah, sorry, I oversimplified.
The exact parallel is in committing an act which one knows before hand will certainly cause the powers-that-be to kill you, and then refusing to take any option offered by those powers which would result in a peaceful resolution.
In both cases (the Sacrifice and modern death-by-cop) the death is brought about by the will of the one who dies. It is thus suicide, irrespective of the fact that other people do the actual killing. So, for that matter, is deliberately walking out in front of a semi doing 30+mph.
