"Why doesn't this carry at least a life sentence. I don't want anyone out on the street if he is willing to try to murder an officer."
Good question! Sad thing about the 24 year possible is that he will never see it.Unlikely that there will be a plea bargain, but I bet the sentence doesn't max out. As far as hefty fines, what a joke. Glad to hear that Officer Cutrone's medical condition is improving and my best wishes to him, his family, and fellow officers everywhere.

I really doubt that they will plea bargain with this scum!! This county wants blood!! We lost an officer 5 years ago and still have not found the last person suspected (known) to have done the shooting. The other 2 suspects died. The courts will want to make an example of this guy.
They are also trying to see if they can add a sentence enhancer to his charges.
When we are done with him, he is also facing charges in Texas.

They won't plea bargain, I agree. However once this p.o.s. gets into the system, many things come into play. Say this p.o.s.(Derrick) gets sentenced to 17 years. Most states would say he was eligible for parole in 8.5 years if he did "good time"; Less time is possible should the Colorado legislature and parole authority decide in the future to modify existing laws and release criteria rather than build another prison.
O.K., this p.o.s.(Derrick) faces Texas law. Most states would try the flake and run any sentence concurrently. Hopefully Texas will not.
While the attorneys go at it we have an officer down. Does the Colorado justice system care? Yes, as long as it is politically expedient. Do you and I care? Damn right!! Does the law enforcement community care? Yes! Do our fellow Freepers care? Obviously, as their care is evidenced by this thread's response.
We, supposedly, comprise and contribute to a a 'nation of laws". Why then can we not exact severe panalties for those who function outside of our laws and hold them responsibile for their actions? There is a fine line dividing those that obey, conform to, and enforce these laws. The shooting of Officer Cutrone graphically illustrates that line. I guess I am rambling, sorry!
