If AWB is renewed, Bush is toast.

Gun activists are widely regarded as delivering three key states for him in 2000. They've made it clear they won't if AWB is passed again.

Manufacturers, who were now limited to selling semiautomatic pistols with 10 round magazines, stopped using magazine capacity as a selling point and instead switched to smaller size guns.

It also IMHO caused an upsurge in the popularity of larger bore pistols such as the .45 1911s.

ZOUNDS! That was quite an education you just gave me on assault weapons. I thank you.

(And where else but on FR could I have gotten such a complete answer?)

I don't think that I should EVER compromise on my rights.

If you, or your son, or your grandson, think differently, that is your right.

By saying that it is acceptable for Bush II and the Republicans to go down the same road as the DemocRATs because there are more important issues to vote on, we are guaranteed the slow, inevitable loss of ALL of our rights.

Is that the sort of America that you want for your grandson?

Campaign finance was not gutted. The court said the basic idea of congress restricting political speech is OK..regards less of what the constitution says.

The SEMI AUTO ban will get to Bush and he will sign it and I will not vote for him again.

Bush signs bills that HE KNOWS are unconstitutional.I will not support that!

If Bush II--A)receives this bill from Congress, and B)signs it, I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM. Period.

Ditto.

you are absolutely right---'no one' is going to do everything that is satisfactory to all BUT to refuse their vote for the best President since Reagan, would be cutting our own throats while the liberals stand and laugh---God Bless America and a man with courage to lead it--G 'W' Bush

So tell me this.... If you are the president and you have consistantly thought 15 steps ahead of your political enemies( I think you will agree with that) What if you knew the assault weapons ban was heading to the Supremes..... The supremes that most likely you will be naming to the court by the time this case gets there. Now you have some political capitol you can spend. You say " I support the assault weapons ban" Knowing all along that it will be overturned in the supreme court that you help seat. Now you piss off the hard core people like us.... but better than that you Neutralize the argument and political momentum of your opponent. You have deflated a HUGE issue for him while your desires is reached by the decision of the 3rd leg of power of govt.
Take a deep breath folks... Bush has done this before.... remember Kyoto? He came out and said he would support it.... however when the congress who ratify treaties was against it ( AND HE KNEW IT) he deflected major political heat. Look guys his enemies underestimate him constantly by doing exactly what you are doing. Don't fall for it. Also the left is going to put out these articles to fracture his base.... THEY ARE BAITING YOU!!! Tell me something ... who exactly will go door to door and collect these weapons? The same Marines that we are proud of? Hardly. What I am saying is this IS politics and you use political capitol based on information you have to your advantage. Remember we just won a war doing the same thing. We bribe/scare/coax the generals and they don't fight.... that my friend is genius...

Still screws me- my .45 1911 can take 13 round magazines.

The Para-Ordnance P13-45, one of the greatest handguns ever made. Even if they are a Canadian company.

You all remind me of my 18 month old grandson when he doesn`t get his way. While I don`t like the so called AWB, my grandson`s Dad is a USMC Captain, who is in Kwait. Our family has a couple of things on our plate that are a little more important the AWB.

Yes it's just these little problems like freedom and the constitution that are causing GWB's "base" to revolt. How about asking the soldiers over there what they are fighting for? Freedom and the constitution will be the majority answer, I'll bet.

True for a double stack. Nice guns though.

Are there pre-ban mags to be had?

Well, this is one area where I don't like Bush, but it won't stop me from voting from him by itself, even though I am totally against any form of gun controls

I hope you do vote for him. But for me there are certain constitutional issues that define what an American, Republican, Conservative is. He's already blown it when it comes to being a fiscal conservative, but maybe for good reasons and that's not why I'm not going to support him. I wouldn't vote for Bush if he came out in support of abortion, and I won't vote for him if he insists that this AWB is a good piece of legislation. To me it says a lot about the man if he will support this nonsense law in the name of political expediency.

rebel said: "The SEMI AUTO ban will get to Bush and he will sign it and I will not vote for him again. "

Same here. I have recently taken an early retirement which cuts my income in half. I have purchased a camper so that my wife and I can visit free states. All this in the hope that I can convince my wife that we should flee Kalifornia.

I am solely motivated by the out-of-control gun grabbers and the outlawing of five of my firearms. These five are now in Nevada and I will not give them up.

So,... who here thinks that I will vote for Bush if he signs a bill which encourages the same mis-guided thinking outside Kalifornia?

"The Para frame retains the familiar and comforting grip angle of the original Model 1911, even with a magazine capacity up to 100% greater. Despite this increase in magazine capacity, the width of the grip is increased only1/8". "

Kept reading. Impressive.

a Republican Congress will strangle this baby in its crib. They'd better, for his sake.

My biggest fear is that he'll have the same problems that his father had. How can they repeat the same mistakes?

What are they claiming the AWs are today? Most haven't the foggiest notion of what one is and mislabeled non-assault weapons as assault weapons - will someone please post and identify these guns - Thanks.

Yes and most people on this forum posting in favor of the ban also don't realize that if you can ban these guns you are 99% of the way down the slippery slope to total ban. We can not give in on this issue!

Are there pre-ban mags to be had?

Answer: Yes, kind of. Para-Ord made a huge stockpile of magazines before the ban took effect, and sell their pistols with coupons entitling people to purchase two pre-ban magazines.

Downsides: 1) I live in California. Our latest AWB and other anti-self defense laws restrict grandfathering to items you yourself owned. You can't even pass along banned weapons in a will in California, nor may you sell pre-ban items. 2) I purchased my pistol used (got a great deal, and it's in wonderful condition), which, coupled with #1, means no high-caps for me until I move out of state and the federal AWB sunsets.

On the bright side, if I ever need more than 10+1 rounds of .45 auto, I'd have a lot more problems than 13+1 would probably fix.
