It only appears to be a “Bam” because the fossil record doesn’t show results in hundreds of years or even thousands but in millions. However, evolution does not favor slow steady change as Darwin suggested. Rather, it only occurs under pressure. Then the changes and differentiations happen rapidly. Truly successful animal and plant designs (such as dragonflies) don’t change much at all. Excepting those kinds of life that have not been altered by environmental pressure all the rest are mutations that display dangerous levels of instability and are all the more likely to succumb to near future rapid adjustments.
