Geology in action. Probably loosened by ice in the cold weather this winter.

This is about the time of year something at that elevation in northern NH thaws. So if ice forced open a crack, this is when it would let go. You will find lots of falling rock in all mountain areas this time of year.

BEFORE:

An U.S. flag hangs over the brow of the Old Man of the Mountain in Franconia, N.H., Tuesday Oct. 2, 2001. The Old Man of the Mountain, a stern granite profile that symbolized the state's independence and stubbornness, is gone, likely the victim of the same natural forces that created it thousands of years ago. A state park trails crew reported at about 7:30 Saturday, May 3, 2003, that the 40-foot tall face was gone from Profile Mountain. (AP Photo/Jim Cole)

AFTER:

The Old Man of the Mountain in Fraconia, N.H , the natural stone profile that appears on everything in New Hampshire from the road signs to the state quarter, fell from its mountainside, leaving nothing recognizable in the cliff face Saturday, May 3, 2003. (AP Photo/Jim Cole)
