No personal offense was taken wardaddy. It was an awful shameful incident that should never have happened. The politicians, particularly Koch had a field day with it though.

I like the Italians from there too. Most lived on the "new" side, which we old-siders called Rockwood Park. The Jewish people lived mostly in the part that we called Lindenwood.

I went to High School in Rockaway, which was predominantly Irish and Black. Truthfully, Queens is such a mishmash of people from so many races and cultures it is a very interesting place to live.

I wouldn't say that the white people are the only ones who staked out their turf and tried to keep others from their neighborhoods though.

I've seen enough hatred from all sides when riding the subways every day and even just trying to shop. Getting lost in any neighborhood you didn't know could be scary when I was growing up there.

I went to a school, Amityville, NY. 50/50 whites to blacks at the time.....Trust me, the guys and gals who did not want to associate with those not white were not making this decison because as you say it "Why should the whites want to party with those with whom they are tense" (that is really lame, besides the fact what about black people makes them tense?)...In any event, I saw it first hand everyday and it happened on both sides. Make excuses, close your eyes...I call it what it is...BIGOTS!

You know some people in the south just has to keep doing stupid things... a shame the image of a biggoted backwooded world below the Mason Dixon line is never going to change thanks to these morons.

Yes they have every right to do what they are doing since they are private parties, but its still incredibly stupid.

Let me see, according to your logic...because some black people are bigots white people should not associate with black people? So, according to this logic you must believe that if some white people call black people Ni**ers I assume you think all white people (any any other people for that matter) should stop associating with all white people because it makes them tense.......I doubt it. I think I am starting to figure you out.

"So...you are saying that if a historically black college has 10 white students (and I would like you to find one for me), then it is fine? Go ahead and reverse this on me. "But not many whites apply!" Savannah State University is not private, but there aren't alot of whites there. Where is the affirmative action and quotas? Buddy, there aren't many white folks there. "

Yup, that's what I'm saying. You want to go to one of those historically black colleges? Apply, and if you meet their qualifications, you can attend. Big difference.

Oh, you say you don't want to go to that college. Never mind.

Don't strain yourself. I'll help you. Segregation is niether a good thing or a bad thing; it's a natural thing. Birds of a feather flock together and DON'T flock with birds of a different feather. You want to fight nature? Go right ahead. But don't label those who don't want to fight nature bigots!

Glad to see you used German in your tagline. It makes it much easier to figure your agenda

You who know me SO well. Thank you for DICTATING who we must socialize with.

Let's admit we have divergent cultures and forcing us all together only increases tension. If they know it will be controversial and yet they see a need to have a separate party anyway, there must obviously be a great deal of tension.

I'm trying to look at your examples, and compare them to the thought process behind excluding people for having the wrong skin color. I'm having trouble seeing the connection.

Religions are by nature exclusive, and girls generally would be in danger participating in sports activities with boys, so the examples of exclusion that you have cited seem innocuous to me.

On the other hand, everyone goes to the prom. People who are free to attend the prom with their friends will be actively excluded from the prom party to which their same friends will be welcome. Why? Because they picked the ethnicity of their parents poorly.

If you are trying to sow distrust and enmity between races, if you want to have another couple of centuries of Americans hating Americans, if you want the South to continue to be berated for being full of backwards, ignorant, and petty people...then I guess this move is not so wrong after all.

I had hoped we were headed in a much more hopeful and enlightened direction. That's why I think it is wrong. I'm sorry that it is not obvious to you.

You're exhibiting the same prejudice you rail against.

I'm exhibiting no such thing. The fact that the South is looked at that way by many people is a FACT. I didn't just make it up, and it's not an opinion I hold.

My point, if I have to spell it out, is that spectacles like this only give fuel to those who do hold that view.

Birds of a feather flock together and DON'T flock with birds of a different feather.

  True enough.

If you happen to be a bird.

Humans, on the other hand, have nice, contradictory, natural instincts on this. On the one hand, we do have a "flocking" instinct to stay with those similar to us. On the other, we have a love and curiosity (sometimes the stronger emotion) about the exotic or merely different. Which instinct triumphs, or the balance struck between them, is a decision - influenced greatly by the local society and upbringing.

  These teens chose badly.

So it's ok to voice stereotypes if you don't agree with them?...OK...I got it.

I find all of this very interesting.

Many on this thread used the same stereotypes as you and I suppose I'll have to guess whether they believe them or not.

The funny thing is I work in a lower class environment in Nashville that is pretty mixed between blacks, whites and hispanics. It would appear around here at least that the whites are rushing as quickly as they can to absorb the very worst qualities of what passes for much of black popular culture today. Baggy pants, thuggishness, serial illegitimacy etc. I suppose that is progress to social engineers but I fail to see it as such.

I would like to as well point out that racial friction is hardly a Southern phenomenum and those who think it is are either deluded or don't get out much. Think LA riots, Miami riots, Cincinnati riots, Crowne Heights (Brooklyn) etc.

Further, while it is obvious that everyone should be granted the courtesy of Constitutional and G-d given rights, that noble gesture has now morphed into basically the concept of forced social integration for which only whites bear responsibility. I find that wrong and racist itself. Are whites held to a higher standard because they are more capable, educated, smarter???...why? Blacks frequently choose to segregate themselves socially. I went to Google and typed in all black proms and all black dorms just for starters. I rarely ever hear anyone say a peep about that.

I'd like to know more about why these students chose this course of action. From what I've gleaned, it's often because musical differences but I admit I am not so sure about that anymore. I don't think they did this simply because they are all little Klukkers in the making. Racial and hence cultural divisions are a fact of life. Respecting one another is a good thing but forcing folks to socially integrate simply for that purpose is not always going to bear the fruit folks desire. We've done that now for nearly 45 years and in areas where there are large minority populations folks are still fairly well segregated socially. Why?...you tell me. I just know that it is/we are.

This whole canard of white racism constantly thrown about here and elsewhere is truly a tiny issue and not much of an issue anymore. Black on white racism is far more prevalent...as well as the hatred many blacks hold for conservative blacks. You could take all the real White Supremacist racists in the country and I doubt it would fill one Nation of Islam rally.

I live in the South and I truly do not know one bona fide White Supremacist.
