From your link (round about, because the page was no longer there):

Duke's experience in Vietnam and his background as an educator prepared him well to train fighter pilots at the Navy Fighter Weapons School -- the famed "Top Gun" program at Miramar Naval Air Station

Very kewl!

Would be even cooler is he piloted the aircraft himself. Wonder if the pilot will let the Prez take the controls and take her for a spin, for old times sake.

MSNBC reported that he did indeed take the stick for part of the trip. Now that is right out of a Clancy, although it would be the VP (Robbie) doing that, Jack couldn't fly.

power off entirely. Shut down.

okay, I'll try that, because it's taking at least a minute for me to post one post (not exaggerating).

He said he flew about a third of the way, and he LIKED it!

Later he said that he missed flying!

Additionally, I'd guess that there are at least two to six helo carrying ships (with helos launched of course) evenly spaced along his flight path.

Why? The S-3 is no more likely to fall out the sky than the VC-25 he usually flies in, and while it is often escorted these days, I don't think they station rescue assets along it's path. Around the carrier is a different story, trapping aboard is the most dangerous part, but there are always "plane guard" destroyers and choppers about when flight ops are being conducted, whether the planes are carrying the CiC, Ensign DumbJohn or Seaman Neverready.

Wow, cool pictures you guys. He looks so natural in that stuff...very hip. (And I, for one, would MUCH rather see a POTUS looking like that than wearing shades and playing a sax - and poorly, I might add.)

That seemed to help quite a bit, justshe....working much faster now; why would shutting off be different than rebooting?

I just got this from Marine, so I don't know how reliable this slice of Naval History is. If true, it is very interesting.

Subject: Re: Go Navy!!

Some little known American Naval Military history:

The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) as a combat vessel carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water
distillers!).

However, be it noted that according to her log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping." Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the Azores, arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England. In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchantmen, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U.S.S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February, 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky and 38,600 gallons of stagnant water.

GO NAVY!

If true, this may be a historical reason why our Navy has been a "Dry" navy for a long time with no alcohol on board.

You would have to ask a techno-geek. I have NO idea why it works better. But giving the 'puter a short time-out seems to work better for me than just a reboot.

Steel beach picnic... I believe they are each allowed one beer... volley ball on the flight deck, too. I suppose it would be a bit of relaxation, after all of their hard work.
