LOL!
We get those almost weekly.
In fact, when the earthquake awoke me, I figured that's what it was...
a big boomer that shook the house (common)
When I saw it wasn't raining was when I was puzzled

Thank you all for the wealth of information! I look forward to reading more about this... it also helps prove the lie that is "American History" class in the schools.

Center now at "Alpine" and is closer to Valley Head than Mentone (by a fraction of a mile). Alpine is a sparce (maybe 20 family) community close the Howard's Chapel (church that was built into the side of a huge rock). Mostly "Alpine" is known as the ole swimming hole everyone used to go to. It has a boys camp now and is no longer available to the public to freely swim at the dam. Alpine is really the west branch of "Little River". Some of the most beautiful country God put on this earth.
Howard's Chapel, it has people buried in the rock on the inside of the church. Located nearly smack dab in the "Alpine" community.

The above post should says that the
Earthquake was centered in the "Alpine" community.
Also now say it was a 4.9 instead of 4.5. That ties as the largest quake in Alabama history.

Memory bump after watching "The Passion" movie with the earthquake in it.
BTW...my chimney is badly cracked I just noticed this year due to having a new roof checked upon.

Funny things happening lately.
The USGS still isn't reporting this one.
If you look at the world wide site there are numerous earthquakes of unknown magnitude. Everywhere from Sweden to Morocco, (the one in Algeria yesterday has disappeared from the site), to New Zealand to (I think) Bolivia to multiple 'quakes in Peru.
Did the USGS lose the recipe for measuring earthquakes???
