I heard President Bush say the other night on TV that he believes they got Saddam on the first night. Are you sure? I thought he just said that possibly Saddam is dead or injured (while leaving open the possibility that Saddam is in good health, and not going so far as to say that he believed that Saddam had been hit).

It's called "deniability."

What happened to "we won't invade Iraq, no way?"
What happened to The Great Anthrax Attack?

It's called "deniability."Sure, but it proves nothing either way. That's why it's called deniability.

What happened to The Great Anthrax Attack? What happened to Saddam Hussein? Once you understand the answer to that question, you will understand the answer to the question you pose.

Saddam Hussein giving valedictory speech to Baghdad supporters, April 9, a few hours after agreeing to surrender terms with Russian envoy.

Sure, but it proves nothing either way.Right. Bush's statement is completely content-free, in other words.

Back up. We were never going to invade, you gave us your iron clad promise.
I have been away from FR for ten days, did I miss your "I was wrong" opus?
Can you link me to it?

We were never going to invade, you gave us your iron clad promise. No, I said we would invade, that shock and awe (a frontal assault on Baghdad) would turn out to be propaganda, that we would encircle Baghdad, and that we would let Saddam off with his life. Pretty good going, don't you think?

You crack me up. You change your story more flexibly than Baghdad Bob on April 8th.
A man would just say "I was wrong" and move on.

Are you sure? I can't give you an exact quotation.
But unlike Clinton
Bush does not parse his words like a lawyer.
It was clear to me
that Bush believes Saddam was hit the first night.
I was startled to hear him say it so clearly.

I was wrong in my prediction that Bush would stall another year for a technical fix for the anthrax threat. I have addressed that extensively on this forum. Unlike many others on this forum, I go out of my way to make disprovable predictions, rather than simply posting some feel-good conventional wisdom which will simply be forgotten about as it is replaced by new conventional wisdom. If my predictions turn out wrong, then I deal with that honestly. If they turn out right --- as they mostly have -- then I take credit for that. And, I take credit for predicting that the "decapitation strikes" would turn out to be bogus, that "shock and awe" would be bogus, and that Saddam would escape this thing with his life -- all vastly unpopular positions when I took them.

However, the videotape which emerged after our invasion of Baghdad was not content-free. One has to have theory about that tape: it wasn't Saddam, it was a double, it was Saddam, but he secretly recorded a tape with hundreds of extras months ago where he deliberately made himself up to appear haggard and bloated and admitted that Iraq was conquered and that Iraqis would find their reward in heaven, or whatever. I go for "whatever" -- i.e. the tape should be taken at face value, just like the anthrax letters.

"
Bush got Saddam the first night of the war."
That is the most important part of this story to me, also.
The USA ( we, America the beautiful ) dropped him in the first second of the first round!
