There was an account posted to FR some time ago, about a man who took his stepson (2 yo IIRC) to a park in a big city, took his eyes off the boy "just for a minute" to get a drink from a fountain-and the child disappeared. I don't remember what city this was in. Does any freeper remember the name of the boy and/or stepfather? Has the boy been found, dead or alive? Any arrests?

San Diego...jahi Turner is the boy's name, and no he has not been found.
Step Dad took him to the park to play, left him for about 15 minutes while he strolled 200 yards to "buy a softdrink". When he returned, the boy was gone.
Howver, no one recalls seeing sdad or the boy in the park. Stepdad claims there was a woman there with two other kids but no one has stepped forward.
SDad is in Maryland where he is in jail pending trial for being an accessory to murder(another case), I believe.

Mom was a sailor...was at sea with her son in the care of this other man who isn't his father. I don't know if she was just genuinely hoodwinked but some people have the morals of lions. A new male lion taking over a pride kills all the former lion's cubs to bring the females back into estrus and to eliminate the genetic material of his former rival.

"However, I noticed some other parents in the neighborhood let their children play outside unsupervised and a few of them are my children's ages, so I end up watching them too sometimes."It's a cultural thing. People tend to raise their kids the same way they were raised. It's the same reason some people let their dogs wander the neighborhood and others keep them leashed.
Certainly kids, and dogs, learn more by wandering around unsupervised, but only if they survive.

That's a GREAT story, thank you for sharing, I'll be filing that idea away for when I need it - my precocious 2 year old is all boy and the mischief never ends. The fact that it hasn't yet occurred to him to unlock the back door and take off into the yard is amazing, so much so that I hesitate to actual type it and thereby jinx myself. You'll probably hear from me again momentarily after I snag him on the porch or something.

Good God -- where were these parents and what were they thinking? I know it can be difficult, but you can corral a three-year old child. I had a tendency to wander when I was a three-year old. My mom put me in a "harness" -- a "kid leash" of sorts.

Neighbors and family friends said they realized the child was missing and had begun looking for him when they discovered there had been an accident. Notice they said "neighbors and family friends", but not parents... Ugh...
