I find this "maddening" from a number of perspectives. It's a veritable PC cavalcade.

"Squaw root"? Like 4 is the squaw root of 16?

Unsubscribe me from your Pity Party. Thanks. Then leave the thread. You've already demonstrated mulitiple times here that the rule of law doesn't mean jack to you as long as you get your dose of liberal feel-good BS. We get your very tiny point.

A recent self-pity rant of yours when enough attention wasn't coming your way:
To: Cultural Jihad
So now you're reduced to saving weeks-old posts from others in order to score cheap points against them later? That's not just sad, it's creepy. Even sadder is that it's Wil H who you were calling the "pity party" guy just fifty posts ago, and now the term applies to anyone who dares disagree with you. Get a grip, CJ. We can disagree if you want, but if your first post of disgreement contains inflammatory statements like in post 70, you should expect to get something similar back.
And none of this means I hate, or even dislike you, but the way this is going, it's getting harder not to take it personally.

Mmm buildings and highways, not mountains and rivers. < Sigh > < repost >
Yes, they are. Keep reading. The articles I cite in 26 and in 31 refer to mountains. A mountain most certainly is a "geographic feature" whether it is renamed for Reagan or Piestewa.
< /repost > Please reread the links above. They ARE mountains.

The good people of Arizona have a toll free number for out-of-state busy-bodies who think they know how Arizonans should self-govern themselves there. Call 1-800-WHO-CARES.

Okay, I officially give up. You want an enemy, you got one.

As a matter of fact, I'm not cruising for trouble.
However, I've lived in Idaho and Montana and I've never heard of the shoeshine indians. I have heard of the shoshone indians. I believe Sacagawea was born into the Lemhi Shoshone tribe.
In my opinion, the spelling error is pretty bad.
It kinda sounds like that blockhead tribe, I'm sorry I meant to write blackhawk tribe.

Well you still didn't explain your use of the hyphen. If you are going to criticize for a simple spelling mistake (thanks to others who more politely pointed out that Shoeshine=Shoshine), then you shouldn't hyphenate words that shouldn't be hyphenated. Especially in a no-hyphenating zone.

If the people of Arizona or their reps want to rename this peak after this brave woman, then it is absolutely fine with me. And I bet that a lot of those opposed here would have had no problem with them renaming it Bush Peak.
And it turns out Lori is from Tuba City, a favorite place of mine with lots of memories.
Just so we'll know who we're talking about:

a no-hyphenating zone. Come again?
You are just digging deeper and deeper. I hyphenated it to emphasize the pronunciation. I should have done what cultural jihad did in post 161, for that I was admit my mistake.
Judging from your responses, your initial mistake sounds more like ignorance than anything else. For example your response mentioning mocassins in post 176.

I'm here to learn. Thanks to the polite people on this thread, I'm learning much about Indian history and culture. So I mispelled Shoshine. Is that really so bad? Am I not a better person for having learned how to spell it properly? Or do you think I should be condemned to the burning fires of hell? Your hyphenation of Shoe-shine is merely a faux paus. I would not condemn you to hell on account of that.

Take it easy Sam, you're well respected here. You're the only Freeper who can WRITE with a New England accent.

My understanding is that they are all *UNITED STATES* veteransSorry, that was my point also. It is now PC to name a peak after someone who served in the Army. Like most of the army, it is more "diverse" than any politically correct university. Nor is this new: the New Mexico National Guard unit that served in the Philippines and was captured at Bataan was also "multicultural" even in the days before integration of the army.
The PC people needed to rename a non pc mountain.
But by naming it after a hero from that state, they honor all veterans.
Of course, they could name it McCain peak. But the conservatives might object....

It is against federal law to rename any geographic sites until the person being named has been dead for five years. And what business is it of the feds as to how a state names features within its own boundaries? It's funny how may folks here are federalists until it is inconvient for the political point they wish to make.
