A question or two about WMDs should have been asked. I thought
Saddam ordered the troops to use them as we crossed the "red line".

The silence on the "Arab Street" is deafening.

....a certain state of mind...In your pajamas with the feet in them, with a mug of hot cocoa, sitting on your dad's lap?
(Well, it worked for me).

Perhaps those questions were asked and we have not been told about all the questions and answers. Or maybe this article gives us a clue why the WMDs were not released. I don't know... all in due time I hope.

As I understand it, in the case of Saddam he had three levels of secret police whose job it was to spy and snitch upon each other. Anyone wanting to stand up to the regime had to consider the consequences of seeing their families tortured and murdered.

What?
No suicide bombers?
No Car bombs?
No mass attacks against the madman? Pansies

He and a group of other Republican Guard commanders had already decided that they were not going to sacrifice themselves or their men for Saddam Hussein...there were so many reports of dams, bridges, and oil facilities which were rigged to explode but never did, I'm wondering if there wasn't a whole command layer that decided this war wasn't worth fighting for Saddam and tried to save as much of the country as they could by refusing to follow orders to engage in "scorched earth" tactics...our troops fought brilliantly, but maybe they had a little help from the other side...

"...our troops fought brilliantly, but maybe they had a little help from the other side..." Yup. I thought 'the plan' anticipated some of this.

The same thing happened in Germany at the end of WWII. Hitler gave scorched-earth orders to his generals, but they refused to carry them out.
No one could have got rid of Saddam from inside.
This is very, very true. How could any kind of substantial resistance have been mounted against Saddam? No one could trust anyone else, so it was impossible to form any kind of coup. Any man who wanted Saddam gone could not afford to recruit anyone else, because he might just give himself away to someone who was spying for Saddam and who would turn him in. In this kind of environment, people follow orders and keep their opinions to themselves. The only way to bring down such a regime is for someone to do it from the outside.
