According to the DOE, there are four major foreign firms involved in the Syrian energy industry. PetroCanada and TotalFinaElf are two of them.

That's correct, and I also believe Shell is involved, although I'm not sure whether Shell is American or Canadian or what? We have Shell stations up here, are there any south of the border?

That isn't necessarily Canada's opinion, that's Chretien's opinion, which has so far been 180 degrees to that of alot of Canucks.

Who asked him?

I got so po'd listening to some United Nations Association(didn't know they even had one)guy on Fox News about what the United States should do by letting the UN take over in Iraq by making up with the French, Germans and Russians.

They were working with Iraq behind our backs. Why would we trust them to help rebuild Iraq?

He kept saying that we NEEDED the UN because, why would the United States want to do this alone? Well, excuse me, but I think we asked for help and they refused. They sided with Saddam.

No, we don't NEED the UN! They only cost us more money getting in the way to be less effective.

The answer is always some governmental bueracracy; invariably through which all funds pass.

The UN was ineffective concerning Iraq, and I see no reason whatsoever that they shouldn't have an opportunity to be ineffective here.

Hope the idiotic Chretien enjoys his golf game with Bubba in the DR. He'll learn at least one new word--"Beel,what is a mulligan?".

Canada has become the "small dog on the big wheel" in world politics - annoying and offensive but of no consequence.

The Canadian government is following its French roots rather than its Anglo-Saxon roots.

That's interesting considering (see source):

The Western oil company with the closest ties to the late Saddam is France's TotalFinaElf. That's not the curious fact, that's just business as usual in the Fifth Republic. This is the curious fact: As Diane wrote in February and again last week, "Total's biggest shareholder is Montreal's Paul Desmarais, whose youngest son is married to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's daughter."

You got that right, our gov't recently pumped a few hundred million into bilingulism and promoting what is essentially a dying language....
