Someone thought that it was russian patriotic. Accually at that age many thought that way. The better understanding came later. Putin was in the KGB for 16 years. He also was in the FSB for 4 years. It took him a long time to get a better understanding wouldn't you agree?

I don't know I'm not aquainted with him personally. I judge by his actions.
If you look on Boris Eltsin that he was commie secretary whole his life.
Almost anyone in today russian elite or from other former socialist countries was someone in previous regime.
Shevy the president of Georgia was KGB general. Aliev the president of Azerbaidzan was personal friend of Leonid Brezhnev and member of Politbureau so highest rank in soveit heirrachy.
Even today president of Poland Kwasnewskii the staunch ally of America was prominent figure of polish communist party.
So former foreign intellegence colonel Putin is small guy in compare with those above.
FSB is russian institution. Analog of FBI. If you blame Putin for being the head of FSB then you may blame him for being Prime Minister then the President of Russia.
I would be stongly against if someone from 5th directorate of KGB (the political police) try to take power. But none of them anywhere nearby.
Curious but just last head of that 5th directorate Philipp Bobkov long time worked on one of Putin enemy the so called oligarch Gusinskii.
So it looks like KSB political police went against Putin after all but Putin prevailed:).
Gussinskii now in emigration hides somewhere in the world. In Russia there are warrant on his arrest.
