..in favor of blandness, monotony, and agreeability.

Isn't that all a bit redundant?

Good one. Noted and acknowledged.

My wife treats me better than that!

Finally!
Some common ground: humor!

Wait. That's not funny.
I apologize.

Well, then, by all means let's avoid the bitch.

Seriously, I think Orwell doesn't need any defense, his work speaks for itself.
I certainly don't feel qualified to defend him.

I can however say I enjoyed his Road to Wiggan Pier and his essay Politics and the English Language, which made me guffaw in parts.
(I work for a bureaucracy.)
All I can say about them is that I enjoyed them.

Sorry for the overreaction; I have a sensitive phobia about confusing personal opinion with intrinsic worth in music, literature, movies or anything else.
Welcome to Free Republic.

I sympathize with your self-inflicted conundrum. It's late. You glance at the bottle and there's only 1/8 of an inch left and that sucks big-time. Then you post something really stupid. Then you futilely attempt to defend it. Then you disolve into pathetic acquiescence and top it off by not-all-that-bad humor (considering you're umm...a little under the weather). Finally, you hate yourself in the morning. Bummer. Hey, lesson learned....only debate while sober (except, it's more fun the other way). Irony.
