When he's talking about baseball and the Brooklyn Dodgers, it may very well be the best baseball book ever written. When he's talking about himself and his family, aside from his father who was an interesting man, it's kind of tough to get through.

Well, I don't know about the whining **** part, but I was a horrible athlete (I could hit a baseball/softball a little bit, but I was so slow that in P.E., they'd let me hit and then somebody else did the running), but I loved sports so I became a sports writer and did it for a long time. I covered everything from Little League Baseball to the World Series, and interviewed everyone from a 4-year-old gymnast from my town who'd been accepted to Bela Karolyi's school in Texas, to Bear Bryant and Billy Martin.

It's because you have people today getting into sports journalism as a stepping stone to something else in journalism. Sports journalism is the best training ground for journalism as a whole because you end up having to be a jack of all trades. You actually have people getting into sports journalism who aren't really sports fans ... which I've always figured would be really difficult, to me it's almost inherent that you've got to have been a fan of sports to cover it well ... for that reason. And of course a lot of those folks who have their sights set elsewhere are liberals. I'm speaking only in terms of newspapers, BTW, it's the only place I have personal experience. Sports columnists are also normally more liberal than your typical "grunt" sports writer, especially those like Albom, Deford, etc., who do more than just sports. Rule of thumb, people who cover the teams day to day and writers/columnists who've been at it a long time and haven't tried to do more than just sports and want to do sports journalism and nothing else, you'll probably find more conservatives there than in any form of the media in this country. If they're just looking at sports journalism as a stepping stone, there's a good chance they're libs.

I don't even follow sports too much, just had noticed that some of the guys on the radio here in Miami sound like liberals, hear them making cracks about Rush, that kind of stuff.

I've sort of liked Ed Pope of the Miami Herald (or Daily Worker, or whatever it is), but haven't noticed his politics.

I always figured a lot of sports guys were from the big cities, which tend to breed leftists anyway.

Thank you for the insights, very interesting stuff.

Kahn's parents were close friends of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg-A bit left of center I'd say.

Imagine if America's past time were modified so as to be politically/socialistically correct!

1. All salaries would be the same.

2. The umpire could only call strikes, thus games would be interminably long!

3. Score would not be kept!

4. There would be no winners or losers!

Ed Pope is one of the true greats of sports journalism ... and not being able to notice his politics in his copy is the way it OUGHT to be on the sports pages.

"As for the actors, they say they didn't plan to talk about the war -- they just wanted to bring their kids to the shrine to talk baseball."

Well, if it is really all about the kids, then Bull Durham should not be a movie shown to the kids. It is an "R" rated movie, especially for language content. I am not here to argue the pluses and minuses of using crude language in a movie, but this movie should not be shown to young kids.
