My son and I were discussing SAWs, M249's, just yesterday because I'm using one in the computer game, "Delta Force-Dagger".

He said they have problems with their SAWs jamming all the time. I should have asked exactly what kind of jam do they get but didn't.

The SAW was pretty reliable when we were using it in the late 80's, but its possible the tolerances aren't so good in that sandy environment.

I forgot to write that he's training near Shreveport LA.

I really don't know what the problem is except he said the members of his fire team aren't the brightest of the bunch. That may be the problem. From what he has said, they use an ungodly amount of ammo and maybe they's just experiencing a fractional precentage of jams.

I shoot at an open range area where a lot of guys show up with autos and they seem to have a lot of jams with everything. The only person I have ever talked to that never has any jams was a guy that used genuine Colt parts in this M-16's and he covered the bolt carrier with a thick layer of grease. Of course that's impossible in desert conditions.

I'll try to get as much information on this and see if he can give me a detailed report the next time he has a weekend.

Any weapon jams a lot more when you are firing blanks than when you are firing live ammo. That may be part of the problem your brother has.

The only problems I ever had with jams with my M16-A2 were when we were using some bad magazines. Once those were gone, jams were very rare.

My son and his fire team don't use blanks in their rushes.

I'll try to get as much information as I can but I doubt it will be before this thread disappears.

Oddly enough, the SAW can be even more reliable when it's dirty. By that I mean carbon, not sand. Never had a jam in mine, however I did get a drum of ammo once where the belt had been loaded into it upside-down at the factory. Of course, my experience with the SAW is nothing compared to that Marine's. A caveat; If the SAW is used with M-4/16 magazines, count on a misfeed.

Geez, I'm not sure where I'd rather be...

Kidding! Just kidding!

The 1st is doing a heckuva job, and I imagine elements of the 2nd are poking around there somewhere as well.
