"the shredder story was widely scoffed at" -- I didn't see those threads; I wonder on what basis would any thoughtful person scoff at such an account when reports of atrocities have been leaked? ...and how easy to scoff from the comfort of our homes. I hope there is a much better future for those in Iraq, and that the many misguided here get a clue how very fortunate we are, how priceless is our freedom. -- cynic#456,789

Some of the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny. The news media will only print this on page A16 of the newspaper or hide it in their internet archives. It's important to get the word out that this is going on!!

Here's the fine folks supporting the Butcher of Baghdad. They oppose war so that he can continue his campaign of murder and mayhem against Iraqi civilians. These people want peace? Supporting a murderous psychopath dictator is sure an interesting way to show it.

Kenneth Joseph, a young American pastor with the Assyrian Church of the East, told UPI the trip "had shocked me back to reality." I guess the age of miracles is not yet past.

This should be SCREAMING from the headlines!!!!! Yes, it definitely should be. And it should be plastered on a billboard across from tomorrow's Academy Awards. The face of every peacenik in Hollywood should be rubbed in these words without mercy. These words should be shoved down their throats.
When I read that paragraph about the human shields, and pictured Iraqis saying they'd rather commit suicide than continue to live under Saddam, I just burst into tears. Powerful, powerful stuff. Just think about it. These poor people suffering their entire lives under a medieval barbarism, then seeing the promise of freedom just over the horizon, then having to wait and wait and wait while the obscene shenanigans unfolded at the UN, and wondering if the freedom would ever come or end up just evaporating. God curse Jacques Chirac. France should become a pariah among nations, shunned as a leper. And the world should beg America for forgiveness for the calumnies they have hurled against us and admit the righteousness of what this great country has committed itself to do. If the scales finally fell from the eyes of those human shields, maybe there's hope that others may also see the light nand save their souls.

"the shredder story was widely scoffed at" ... I wonder on what basis would any thoughtful person scoff at such an account when reports of atrocities have been leaked?Because, in the past, certain colorful Iraqi atrocity stories have been disproved. Remember the premature babies ripped out of the incubators in Kuwait hospital, during the Gulf War? They even produced a tearful eye-witness. A pity she was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador, and was in Washington the whole time.
There are plenty of genuine stories of human rights abuses within the Iraq regime, and dark stories about Sadaam's sons. But this mincer story was never once reported by the Iraqi opposition groups who have reported on atrocities over the past few years. It appeared suddenly, in foreign sources, and is now being repeated everywhere.

From UPI.
Think we will ever see the truth in a Reuters or AP report?

There are plenty of genuine stories of human rights abuses within the Iraq regimeYep. I always thought that the documented "yellow rain" gassing of entire villages by Saddam would be enough. The brutal mass murder of innocents is usually enough for most people.
But when Ari brought this up at a press briefing two weeks ago, Helen Thomas replied, "That was twenty years ago."
Oh. Well then...

From anti-war protesters??
Some of the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny. They convinced me that Saddam was a monster the likes of which the world had not seen since Stalin and Hitler. He and his sons are sick sadists.

I agree that this should be screaming from the headlines.
Pastor Ken Joseph visited our home on his way from Japan to Iraq. He was accompanied by Sen. John J. Nimrod (Ret. - Illinois Legislature), Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA).
Pastor Ken is committed to protecting the Assyrian citizens of Iraq. Assyrians, of whom I am one, are the indigenous Christian people of Mesopotamia. Our people played a major role in WWI when they sided with the Allies under the impression that they would receive autonomy post war. Since then, the Assyrian people have been subject to constant persecution and martyrdom in the Middle East, and are in diaspora throughout the world.
You can see a picture of Pastor Ken and read about him at
http://www.nineveh.com/churchinjapan.htm. I think that all Assyrians knew that the situation was very bad, but Pastor Ken has seen it first hand and found it to be much worse.

A group of American anti-war demonstrators who came to Iraq with Japanese human shield volunteers made it across the border today with 14 hours of uncensored video, all shot without Iraqi government minders present. Kenneth Joseph, a young American pastor with the Assyrian Church of the East, told UPI the trip "had shocked me back to reality." Some of the Iraqis he interviewed on camera "told me they would commit suicide if American bombing didn't start. They were willing to see their homes demolished to gain their freedom from Saddam's bloody tyranny. They convinced me that Saddam was a monster the likes of which the world had not seen since Stalin and Hitler. He and his sons are sick sadists. Their tales of slow torture and killing made me ill, such as people put in a huge shredder for plastic products, feet first so they could hear their screams as bodies got chewed up from foot to head."Hmmm. Maybe the shields aren't all hopeless fools. It just takes the metaphorical equivalent of a sixteen ton weight dropped on their head to cure their feckless moral relativism. (Where even that doesn't work the literal equivalent might still be employed. See: Corrie, Rachel.)
