I don't know whether they got him or not but it seems to me from the video that Saddam has either: 1) aged an awful lot; or 2) was substituted for by someone's 88-year old aunt wearing a discarded beret from the 1930s.

I think it was Helen Thomas... though the content of the statement sounded too reasonable and even-handed to be coming from her.

"There are only two people willing to perpetrate the hoax that Saddam is still alive if he were dead - his two sons."

On the contrary, there are many in the regime who would be imprisoned or shot when the regime falls besides those three and it would be in their interests to perpetutate the myth he might be alive to save their own skins.

The setting looked very gerry-rigged with the blue curtain. It just didn't have Saddam's mark on it.

"Pay no attentiion to that man behind the curtain."

Assuming that Saddam were dead, but one of the sons is alive...one could vision them still trying to hold to power...However, I am of the opinion that human nature being what it is, and that Saddam has tortured and killed so many CLOSE to him, that the minute he assumes room temperature, they will come out with their hands up....this guy is TRULY evil, and althoug I think you are right that he is NOT the only evil one amoung the top ranks, I just can't see them holding together without him.

I hope it's true but I doubt it because it's so hard to get one man with a couple dozen missiles.

AF Lt Gen Michael Short said this morning on MSNBC that 4-2000 pound bunkers busters to open it up followed by cruise missles and then cluster bombs to blanket the area. If he was there it might be hard to tell anymore.

I agree too but I do recall one defector saying that Saddam was much older looking than all the tapes that continually shown on TV as they were shot long ago. OTOH if that is true, who then did Dan Rather interview???

My problem with "shock and awe" is that WE KNOW ABOUT IT!!!!

That tells me it probably isn't the REAL STRATEGY.

Jeez, don't reporters ever get it? In 1991 they were spoon-fed an "amphibious landing" and swallowed it. (I'm not complaining---we should NOT know what the military has planned, but neither should the idiot leftist reporters).

So I have real doubts that the campaign was ever supposed to involved the 3,000 missiles and "shock and awe" that was foisted on the press.

"I am being told by several senior officials not to take that taped speech Saddam gave last night as proof that he survived the attack," CBS NEWS reporter David Martin said on air.

Are the officials not even considering that he could have taped that speech beforehand? Why is no one talking about this possibility?

There are only two people willing to perpetrate the hoax that Saddam is still alive if he were dead - his two sons.

Or one of the high-ranking officials who's on the "wanted" list and knows he'll be prosecuted for crimes against humanity when the regime is gone. Either way, the charade can't be maintained indefinitely.

I would have thought we'd have heard more from Saddam or one of his sons by now, if they were able to respond.

There are others that have committed crimes that doom them if this ends. They extend well beyond Saddam's sons.

Just posted the same thing. GMTA.

I don't by it. I think only Saddam and his boys actually believe they have a chance of escaping. They rest of them know they'll inevitably be imprisoned - likely shot if they perpetuate the war.

We'll see.

Also, Saddam seemed to have gained some weight in the last 24 hrs.

If you were in his shoes, you wouldn't bother sticking to your diet, either.

That's highly unlikely ... Saddam and a few of his top co-horts perhaps but his sons would not be there ... for obvious reasons.

That would be true of most rational people, but as someone on Fox was saying in the last few days (Brit or Tony?), Saddam is not very smart when it comes to making military decisions and always overestimates his own abilities. Also he never has a realistic perspective because his officials are all afraid to tell him anything he doesn't want to hear. So if he really thought this bunker was impenetrable (and underestimated US intelligence capabilities) he might have brought his sons there for the first night after the deadline expired.
