Not only is it inherently dangerous to allow a country such as Iraq to retain such weapons, particularly in the light of its past aggressive behaviour, but the failure of the world community to disarm Iraq will encourage other rogue States to do likewise, safe in the knowledge that the world will do nothing to stop them.
Thank you PM John Howard

Australia's alliance with the United States is also a factor - unapologetically so. Thank you, Australia...and "ditto".
Thank you for posting this heart-warming speech...and, thanks also for the "ping", madfly.

What an interesting contrast the speech by John Howard makes to the sleazy media exposure bill clinton is exploiting, exploiting to divert the world's attention away from his feckless ignoring of the growing terrorist threat in the hopes that it would not hurt his re-election chnaces or those of his fractured democrat socialist buddies. Lies and dissembling are all come from clinton and Carter now, while a man like John Howard or Tony Blair or Jack Straw or George Bush tells the truth and ignores the future effect to elections or political pull. The threat is nearly too far advanced to stop it now, and these men of principle stand in stark contrast to the degenerate clinton+democrat party cabal acting to undermine the war we are already in merely because they calculate failure by this administration will get more democrats elected. Failure now will mean tens if not hundreds of thousands of Americans will be killed by rampaging terrorists supplied with weapons of horror by states like Iraq. The democrats be damned, this is the survival of our nation at stake. We know how impotent democrats will be if they ever have to face the real world threats while they hold the reins of power ... bill clinton and his criminal enterprise democrat party have shown it to us over an eight year period, allowing the enemy to grow in strength and reach without real opposition from the US government of clinton and democrats! Have we learned the lessons?

An alliance such as ours with the United States is a two way process. Australians should never forget that no nation is more important to our long-term security than the United States. Terrorist groups want weapons of mass destruction. Of that there can be little doubt. Australian intelligence agencies, including the Office of National Assessments, judge that Al Qaida has demonstrated the intention to acquire or develop chemical and biological weapons, and an interest in radiological and nuclear weapons. This judgement reflects the intelligence community's professional assessment, and is based on an analysis of the full range of available intelligence. But it is not just secret intelligence that points to this conclusion. Information in the public domain indicates that Al Qaida has made repeated attempts to acquire chemical, biological, and nuclear materials and capabilities over almost a decade, and continues to do so. Well said. Wonderful speech by John Howard. Australia is one of our quiet allies whose support remains strong.
