People from cities such as Fort Worth and San Antonio gathered on the Capitol steps Saturday morning to support President Bush, the U.S. military and a possible war with Iraq.

'Rally for America' attracts many in favor of military action in Iraq

Central Texans formed a sea of red, white and blue on the south steps of the Capitol Saturday as they rallied in support of President Bush and military action in Iraq.

Five hundred people attended the Texas Review Society's "Rally for America," according to event coordinator Mistie Davis.

"The purpose of this event is to show our support for our president, our troops and our country," said Alan Sager, a member of the Texas Review Society and a UT lecturer in the government department.

Decisions affecting national security and foreign policy should not be partisan, Sager said.

"When it comes to supporting our troops and our country, we're all Republicans, we're all Democrats and we're all Americans," he said.

Pastor Lee Boss of Victory Christian Center gave the invocation and reminded the participants that the rally should not be a glorification of war.

"It's not a pro-war rally; it's a standing-with-America rally," Boss said. "We are not for war, but we are against terrorism."

KLBJ radio personality Don Crawford offered a historical overview of the role played by the U.S. military.

"America is the beacon of light in the history of the world," Crawford said. "Killing and war are never desired by loving, moral people, but they are sometimes necessary."

Younger generations are having to face a whole new set of dangers, said Austin Bay, a syndicated columnist and author of A Quick and Dirty Guide to War.

"Terrorists plus rogue states plus weapons of mass destruction is the formula for hell in the 21st century," Bay said.

Bay argued that war is the only path to a lasting peace in Iraq.

"This is our moment in history. Our actions are crucial in securing genuine peace," Bay said. "The bayonet to the throat remains the only method for establishing authority."

Bay also condemned the current Iraqi regime and called for the establishment of a new democratic government.

"Reforming rogue states should be the common goal of a civilized world," Bay said.

Gilbert Diaz, an Austin resident, said he felt it was important to be at the rally to support Bush and the United States military.

"Freedom is something we really have to cherish. I believe the people in Iraq are waiting for us," Diaz said.

A group of about 10 anti-war protesters interrupted the rally but were made to relocate outside the Capitol gates by Department of Public Safety officers.

"War is never a method to peace," said Amy Hunter, an anti-war protester. "Attacking Iraq is only going to escalate potential terrorism."

Bump-o-rama!

I just spared with one of Saddam's useful idiots outside the Capital about an hour ago. I will not quit!

A co-worker of mine and a former Navy F-14 navagator walked up to my desk yesterday (Thursday) and thanked me for what he saw me say on KVUE the night before. They are still showing some clips of our rally on local news here in Austin.

Is that online anywhere? I had walked away from the cameras when you were speaking and haven't been able to see it yet.

I don't think that it is online anywhere. Someone suggested that I get a copy from KVUE, but I don't like watching myself on camera....too self critical, paranoid, or whatever irrational thoughts that I have about it.

I freep the creeps who infest the Capital at least once a week. I work downtown, and often see these "people" in front of the Capital on Congress street.

Let us know sometime when you're doing this. I live downtown and it's no problem getting there.

I do declarah! I think that's my red head in that photo--LOL!

That was a good rally, and I was sure happy to see so many make the effort to come out for it--especially in a liberal city like Austin.

Thanks for giving me a private reply. You can't find mine to you but I appreciate the one you sent. So we did know each other in Germany but you didn't say who you were or a phone number or email. That is in my reply to you.

Please look for MAIL TO YOU or YOUR MAIL at the top of the page tiny letters when you open FR. It is not inside a thread.

Please reply again. I don't get on this computer often to check my mail to me. I lurk on another computer. This is driving me crazy. :)

Don't know if you are still checking this thread. I got your message and I sure didn't think it was you when I read your 1st intro to FR. I have tried to call but got 3 different numbers that could have been you and none are.... so planning to go thru my Christmas cards to get a number. That may take a long time.

anyway what brought me to FR is that I was a freeper before I knew what freepers were. A great story... but mostly met Austin freepers around the Govenor's Mansion after election before concession and we later became the Heart of Texas Chapter. Really good new friends. I have even freeped Hillary with the DC Chapter.

We have moved to San Marcos and are in the book if you are inclined to call. I would love to call you back.
