I spoke with both Senator Hatch and Frist offices today

Did you ask the staff if Frist has been to work lately? What a disappointment he has turned out to be, a real non-entity. He may be as wimpy as Lott. They should have foreced 24/7 weeks ago. Frist stinks, give Geo. Allen or Orin Hatch a shot.

The problem with a 24/7 filibuster is that the Democrats will need to keep only a few Senators on the floor at a time, so that they always have someone there to keep talking. The Republicans, on the other hand, will need to keep at least 50 Senators on the floor at all times, in order to defend against a quorum call. (If a majority of Senators is not present, there is no quorum, and the Senate adjourns.) Going 24/7 is a good tactic to defeat a single filibustering Senator, but in this case, it will tire out the GOP faster than it tires out the Dems.

Thanks for that clear & simple explanation.
That's an interesting point.

"Just hope nobody decides to use the cots or mattresses for hanky-panky."

Lessee, the women in the Senate include Feinswein, Babs Boxer, and Hillary!
"Hanky-Panky?"
Yee-uck!

Why? Let Hatch take the fire. He doesn't care. Let Frist be our good cop.

Do you recall a Vanity Fair article from around December of 2001 about the staffers on the Hill?

I ain't worried about the female Senators - it's the female staffers who I'd worry about.

Actually, it seems to me that the GOP would need to keep 51 MINUS the number of Dems on the floor in order to maintain a quorum. If there are 10 Dems on the floor, we'd need 41 of our guys. In actuality, they don't all have to physically BE on the floor - just nearby in case of a vote.
