Rather did not anticipate any criticism from supporters of a potential war with Iraq who might be upset that he's talking with the nation's potential enemy. "I'm a reporter," he said. "What reporters do is try to talk to everybody on all sides of the story. I don't know any journalist who wouldn't take this interview. If you do, have them call me, collect."
I am thinking of the interview Rather did with Clinton as his final year in office began, and also that ambush attempt at George H.W. Bush during the 1992 campaign.
Gee, I wonder which of those two "big get" interviews more closely resembles his sit down with Saddam.

Saddam refuses to destroy missiles....by Niko Price AP BAGHDAD, Iraq (Feb. 25) - Saddam Hussein indicated on Monday that he does not intend to follow U.N. orders to destroy his Al-Samoud 2 missiles, and challenged President Bush to an internationally televised debate via satellite linkup. In a three-hour interview with CBS anchor Dan Rather, the Iraqi leader said he envisioned a live debate with Bush along the lines of those in a U.S. presidential campaign, according to the network. The White House dismissed the debate offer as meaningless.

It makes perservearing bearable on the darkest days.
