I LOVE to get people started on stuff! (I learn a lot that way.)
Rumor hath it that a Cherokee lady married one of my GGG grandfathers up in Western Carolina, but I don't think we qualify even under their very expansive laws of descent. He was also on the run from the law in Scotland (as were most MacGregors at one time or another) and changed his name at some point, so you can imagine that tracing him has been a bit of a chore.

My family is what is commonly referred to as Mohawk, Mic Mac, and just a touch of Blackfoot... Tracing family trees has been difficult, to say the least... But, I spent a LOT of time with my Great-grandmother as a child, and learned a lot from her before she died - many young people today don't even think about that, and lose a part of themselves in the process (of course, thats just my opinion LOL)

You know, he was admitted to the Bar only a couple years after I was. Assuming he went straight through from college to law school, he's quite an old dog now, nearer 50 than 40. Seems a bit elderly to be prancing around with the anarchists.
Not that nearer 50 than 40 is elderly, mind you (ahem!) - just most of us by the time we have reached this age have acquired a little more sense.
If you go round to that address (the suite number is in the Bar directory) you'll probably find a notice on the door, only this and nothing more.

I spent a LOT of time with my Great-grandmother as a child, and learned a lot from her before she died - How valuable that is! I was fortunate to know one of my great-grandmothers - my paternal grandmother's mother. She was a beautiful, darling Southern lady, even as a very old woman. She had always been cosseted because she was "delicate" - and she outlived two husbands and died at 97! Her father and father-in-law were both Confederate veterans, and I heard from her many exciting stories of their combat experiences as they told them to her. Also what it was like to grow up back before modern conveniences. I sometimes feel that I didn't appreciate her knowledge enough or listen hard enough - but I was quite young then (8 years old when she died.)

I think one of the more interesting details, though small on the 'excitement' scale, that was taught to me was ;Wheat Coffee'...
After being corrupted by the Evil White Society (heh heh heh) whenever coffee was hard to come by and/or was too expensive, she would make 'Wheat Coffee' by toasting wheat from the fields and would use it as the "coffee" grounds... other times, she would scrape burned toast and use the scrapings to make 'coffee'... tasted like crap, but I can see how it would be a good thing to drink when you needed a warm cup of something on a cold new england morning :0)

My great grandmother told me how, after Sherman came through, they would make ersatz coffee from roasted peanut hulls or okra seeds. Chickory was better if you could get it.
She said if you mixed it with a little "real" coffee it wasn't so bad.
To: AnAmericanMother
Oh god... Chickory Coffee... BLECH!!!!!
Boiled Peanuts aint too bad though ;0)

I think you have to be a denizen of the Crescent City or points south to like chicory coffee. I'd rather go thirsty.
. . . and you can have any biled peanuts that come my way. I don't do green slimey stuff as food. No okra, and no biled peanuts.
