See in your minds eye a box of baking powder that got wet and dried. That is approximately what a tile is.

When it looses it's coatings and is no longer bonded, the extreme 3000 degree heat and turbulence will turn it back into silica powder.

As to the distance it will travel after leaving the shuttle at over 18,000 mph in a rarefied, practically non existent atmosphere, wellll............it will go far and long. The estimates vary, depending on winds and currents, but 200 miles would be a conservative estimate.

Tiles and bits smaller than grit, traveled from Dallas to the texas border when the speed of the shuttle had slowed to a great extent.
