Did you have GPS and AWACS and JSTARS to guide and keep track/control things? This is a very different air war that, say, Viet Nam.

I don't think there will be much time between the onset of the air campaign and the ground campaign in this one. Three days at most, maybe not that.

Very off-topic, but on the topic of running jokes about the Air Force, we have a good friend who was a disbursements accountant way back when in his Air Force days. Yes, an extremely low-risk role in the service most-razzed for luxury accomodations and low-risk for most members.

The running joke was that the disbursement accountants were the "titless WAFs". ;-)

Didn't Air Force Logistics give out a contract for design for a containerized, airdrop golf course?

Well now *L* That's where I am now, NAS Oceana base housing. Hubby's currently out to sea (his FR screen name is Hostel). Love it out here, our oldest son is in a wonderful school program for autistic children that's made a world of difference.

Whatever happened to Tab anyway?

Replaced by various incarnations of Diet Coke.

Doesn't using commercial aircraft for military purposes put -all- commercial aircraft at risk during a time of hostilities?

Yeah. We're about to rediscover what war is.

It's not like we haven't been at war since at least 9-11-01, which IIRC, involved th destruction of commercial aircraft going about their normal civilian business, with the CRAF not activated. I'd say there was already plenty of risk to commercial airliners. Besides, use of commerical hulls, be they airborne or seaborne, is nothing new. Most of the cargo ships involved in the great convoys supplying material to our and alied forces in WW-II were commercially operated. My paternal uncle was a member of the Naval gun crew on such ships( yes they armned them against submarines making surface attacks) making the run to Murmansk in the Soviet Union. For his efforts he ended up in the North Atlantic, twice. I don't know if it was U boats or the Luftwaffe that got him, mabye both.

The Greatest Generation had the whole war experience. I was lucky enough as to be old enough right after WW II to see my relatives, aunts, uncles, and neighbors as they readjusted to civilian life. One uncle flew freighters to Africa; another flew bombing missions. Everybody was in the service or keeping the family fed and clothed while the bread-winner was serving abroad. Then the war was over and the world was rosy again--until [what? again?] Korea.

So, your telling me my $199 round trip to France on March 1 is not a good idea?

I don't know... but, every sailor, and their family members that I spoke to, while living in Hampton Roads, hated Norfolk. Being a former Navy wife, I hated it to... but, loved living on Buckroe Beach, watching my husband's sub come through the channel. Nothing like watching the boats and ships come in and out of port! A beautiful sight, indeed. :)
