I was suprised by this and am supportive of spending money in this fashion. Bush is indeed compassionate.
On the other hand I am a lot less convinced about the hydrogen car proposal, but I suppose you have to start somewhere.

The Constitution is just a crutch for whining idealists. Can't you see Bush is defeating the democrats by agreeing to only half as much as what they will ask? This is a great political move! Who cares if it's constitutional??? Republicans rule!

Chuckle.....ah, weikel. Yes, the cameraman can give a sandwich....and what about the next day? And the day after that? And WHERE do you suggest you take all those U-Hauls? Can they move in with you? Will you feed them? Should the trailers be taken to the nearest cities? Will the residents of those cities open their doors to take in the millions that are going to be arriving?
You really don't have a clue.
But then.....maybe under YOUR scenario, these people won't exist at all, because their country will have been nuked into oblivion already.

"Who cares if it's constitutional??? Republicans rule!"I care! If the only thing that matters is Republicans in office then we a no better than the demoncraps.
Men died, risked their homes, families and their wealth to give us the US Constitution and for political reasons you want to ignore it? Please, rethink your position.

:-) Another way to look at it is that Africa has been largely in the sphere of influence of the former colonial powers in Europe. We're encroaching on "their" territory, if we involve ourselves directly.

I remember that Sam Kinison routine. It was funny; actually it was hilarious. I laughed my ass off at it, because it was a COMEDY ROUTINE!!!! It's not the stuff of real foreign policy.

So if straight people get it there then why don't they get it here? Because the level of promiscuity among heterosexuals here is not at the level it is in Africa.
There is little homosexuality in Africa, so the virus thrives within the pool of infected heterosexuals. In addition, the rate of STDs of various types is greater in Africa. This provides the open sores for aids to be transmitted between heterosexuals.
I don't think there is as much of a bridge between the drug-using/homosexual population here and the heterosexual community. They cross paths via drug use (injectable) mainly by heterosexual women and their partners.
Africa is only a generation or two from wide-spread polygamy. The notion of monogamous sex simply doesn't exist.
Women (especially wives) have no say in their own sex lives, as far as use of condoms etc. SO if their philandering husband comes home infected, they don't have alot of power to prevent their own infection.
It is very disgusting to read some of the comments here on FR by posters who make assumptions about which they know NOTHING.
Someway Uganda has found something that works. The best thing about abstinence is that it will help to build up stronger marriages as well as prevent the transmission of aids.

Yes, you are right - Bush is buying votes - black votes here in the USA. This is a bone being thrown to the black community. A stroke of political genius, but I still don't like it. If the money goes to the continent of Africa, it will simply end up in a Swiss bank account with very little actually being used for AIDS relief. Such is life....
To: All
Some people feel that prolonging the lives of AIDS victims actually increases the spread of the disease. It's not a PC opinion, but it's logical.

I remember the routine too, wimpycat. And it WAS hilarious. I would NEVER, however, say that I would vote for Kinison for President. At least not with a straight face...lol.

...if we dont' stop the epidemic there NOW, we will have our own critical epidemic HERE because of it...
Unless those with AIDS are brought here to have sex or pass the disease on in some other manner I don't see how their "epidemic" will become ours.
Could you explain yourself a bit further. I simply don't see how you get from A to B.
Secondly, where is the Constitutional authorization for this expenditure?
Thirdly, what "bang for the buck" are we getting for all of this "Aid for AIDS"? Where, or what, is the return on the investment?
To: rabidralph
"Or do they expect the US to foot the entire bill for an epidemic that is not our fault?"
Of course they do.
Liberals cannot be appeased.
