So Mauldin talked his grandparents into lending him all the money they had -- "their last 500 bucks" -- to grubstake him. "All I could afford was one year," he said. "So I knew I had to make the most of it. And I did." He repaid them with his support the rest of their lives.

Says much about this man. Rest in Peace, Mr. Maudlin.

Sgt. William H. Mauldin, Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist with "Stars and Stripes" and the 45th Division paper, arrived at La Guardia Field aboard an Air Transport plane early today. Holder of the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, and the European Theater Ribbon with six battle stars, Sgt. Maudlin has 131 points since he entered the service with the National Guard in September 1940. When questioned about his experiences overseas he stated, "if you want to find out about the war, talk to a real infantryman, not to characters like me." Sgt. Mauldin's first plan is seeing his wife, Mrs. Maudlin, and their 22 month old son, Bruce, whom he has not yet seen. (June 11, 1945)

There had darned-well better be an after-life (and reward) for someone like Mauldin...

Two hundred years from now, Joe and Willie will still comfort and amuse the American soldier in combat. Here's my all time favorite of Mauldin's. All of us recon monkeys know how this soldier felt. :)

Division Artillery? I've got a target for you, but you'll have to be patient.

I'll be danged...I've seen it before ("Lincoln" mourning JFK's assassination)...and
never knew it was Mauldin's.

I hope someone posts my two favorites:
1. The GI covering his eyes as he prepares to "put down" his broken jeep with a
.45 round through the hood...
2. the "Tommy" carping about how the Yanks had left such a mess on the battlefield.

Not many editorial cartoonists today worthy to tie Mauldin's shoestrings...
maybe Michael Ramirez of The Los Angeles Times (just about the "token" voice of
reason on their editorial page).
