Well first let me say that I don't endorse a policy of perpetual expansion of material goods either nation-wise or personally for its own sake. There are a number of things far more important than money, large cars etc.

However saying that we have to decrease our standard of living because we're going to run out of raw materials is an old argument from the left. Paul Ehrlich and others have made that argument many years previously. I believed them at the time, and they turned out to be incredibly wrong. So I don't believe arguments from the left about anything anymore, although I will concede anyone can be right occasionally about some things. I think wise management of resources and trust in the inventive ability of people is better than pessimism.

WHY DO OTHER COUNTRIES HATE US?

A better question would be "why we would care weather they like us ot not?" Would'nt it? Were still feeding the world and they hate us .
When theres a disaster were there to help clean up.
When theres oppression were there to squash it.
When theres an emergency were there to fight it .
Were a shoulder to cry on a crutch to lean on in times of need and yet most are UNGRATFUL for what we do

But on the other hand if we stop doing all those great things we do then were the ones who get labeled stingy uncaring and evil ......OH sure theres other countries out there that give the way we do but for the life of me i cant remember who or which ones they are .

Why are we hated ? I think were a vehicle for hate not people in general or any specific government office but the IDEA of FREEDOM is the vehicle I think freedom in and of itself is fair but the way its played out in other contries is not the freedoms government gives those respected countries is restricted to the point that freedom is just a word but not enacted whereas freedom to us is lived out everyday anyway we choose to live it so why they hate us is a vehicle for jealousy from other countries and a jealous country or person can portray that hatred in many ways and them hating us is just one way to vent their frustration over the inadequate ways of their restrictive governments and the way they are forced to live.

Then again maybe im all wrong.

It is not easy to answer your posts. They are generally incomprehensible and often seem to contain personal attacks not allowed on this Forum.

Your anti-Bush rants have no basis in fact. You echo the words of appeasement from Germany's spineless socialist leader. Such assertions are worthless and appear to support one of the world's worst dictators since Hitler--Saddam Hussein.

Have the Germans learned yet the ultimate fate of militaristic dictators who exerted complete control over their populace? History tells us that very situation occured in Europe though a dictator's use of all-out war, terror and state-sponsored death to his opponents. Millions of unfortunates belonging to certain ethnic groups were eliminated. In those unhappy days, it took the armies of many allies to defeat that hateful dictatorship. Was that a good thing then?

Saddam has used the same tactics against his enemies (Iran, the Shiites and the Kurds) and has waged war on Kuwait. He also has WMD and would use them immediately if we were not opposing him now. Why is that that hard to understand?

??? Paulus Invictus, you have not understood what I said on this thread. I spoke for the German people, and in particular for the government, but mostly not for me.

The question was "why do other countries hate us" - I answered. Please look at my profile and then think again if I´m against your Presidents position on Iraq.

Germans have learned from the past, more than any other nation (excepted Japan). Now they have two alternatives:
pacifism and hoping that that will lead to less violence or engagement against aggressors and having the risk to be an aggressor by doing so, too. Most people here do not believe that there´s enough evidence against Saddam to choose the second option.

Hope, that you now understand,

Michael

It´s just not true what you write. You ignore, that Germany had to pay reparations and for the costs of the occupation from 1945-1994 (indeed, the occupation ended officially in 1994 after reunification). It was a lump sum as I told you before.

Please look on my profile.

The good news of today:
The German Armed Forces are protecting US facilities in Germany from now on while most US soldiers are in the Gulf region. Some thousands soldiers will guard the bases and control the entries within the next weeks or maybe months.

Have a nice day and thank you for caring about this country,

Michael

The best example that should answer this obvious question is: last year in the world economic forum, the entire world came to New York to show solidarity with the US. This forum typically meets in Switzerland. At this year's forum, last weekend, the US was the subject of hostilities from most of the attendees because of our insistence on PREEMTIVE war against Iraq, without allowing the inspectors’ time to inspect or report, as well as without taking into consideration the UN decisions.

Wolfowitz has no business pushing this country into a belligerent arrogant stance. That by itself pushes other nations to resent us. It is natural for people to resent the rich and powerful, Wolfowitz is rubbing everybody’s nose in it. A worldwide sense of goodwill toward the US has been wasted, and converted to resentments, simply because Wolfowitz, and the neocons in the Bush administration chose to project their arrogance then working with Mr. Powel, and the diplomats. On the world stage, nations have dignity, and demand respect through consultations. Wolfowitz, Bill Kristol, Richard Perle, Ken Adelman were behind marginalizing Mr. Powel.

Again, the head lines in the French newspapers on 10/11/01 said “We are ALL Americans”. Most of the world capitals showed spontaneous sympathy with us, and till today, the European government are constantly raiding Islamic centers and sleeping cells of Moslem terrorists. How do you imagine the reaction of the German or the French people who are working hard to arresting the Moslem terrorists, and in return find out that they are being called insulting names by us. That should explain the reasons for the resentment. Our European friends don’t hate us, they were made to resent us by Mr. Wolfowitz, and the militant neocons.

When we bombed Afghanistan we did not have any opposition. Also, if we wanted to bomb Saudi Arabia, the source of funds and ideologies we probably will have no opposition. The current opposition is basically because there are no evidences on Iraq, and the way we are treating the UN, and other countries on the Security Council. Let Secretary Powel shmooz the diplomats, it works all the time.

Its not PREEMITIVE, war has been going on since 1990, and with massive Material Breaches, and two attacks on the World Trade Center by Saddam, the last of which was successful.

Don't Care if Cowards in the leadership of GERMANY and FRANCE disapprove, that's just too bad.

Your argument is really SILLY.

We do have PROOF of MWD.

The Euros had provided ASSISTANCE to SADDAM to develop MWD.

Euros are afraid we will make that CRYSTAL CLEAR when we inspect IRAQ with AMERICAN BOOTS on the GROUND and I am not talking about UN Inspectors.

Wolfowitz is right to RUB THEIR NOSES.

Lived in Europe for 3 years, know their GREEN, Socialist, appeasing traits FIRST HAND.

EUROPEAN IDEAS, and Policies, are not new, not original, they are tired, and they love to repeat history with more appeasement.

The FRENCH and GERMANS love to help dictators with their technolodgy problems.

Most people here believe that Saddam is a big threat to world peace. That the Euros think otherwise, means nothing to the US.

Had the French and Brits acted aggressively against Hitler when he took over the Rhineland, he and his party may have been history. France and England didn't and look what happened.

How much evidence ofr WMD do you want? Do you actually believe the few inspectors will be able to turn up such evidence in a country the size of Iraq in a limited time frame when the Iraqis have had all the time they need to hide WMD? If you believe this is feasible, you are naive in the extreme.

Saddam is reported to have threatened death to his scientists and their families if they are interviewed privately by the inspectors. Is that not enough yet to convince anyone that he is not cooperating? He never has cooperated with any inspectors in the past 12 years or now. What other options are there? How do you enforce peace? The UN is powerless as is most of Europe some of whose countries are doing all they can to make it easy for Saddam to avoid destruction.

Paulus,

you still accuse ME ("you"). Didn´t you know that I support strikes against Iraq?
I agree that France and England should have interfered in 1935 when Hitler marched in the demilitarized zone. Hitler himself described the 24 hours waiting for reactions from London and Paris as "a day of fear".

Saddam had 5 years to hide his chemical and biological weapons and missiles, it´s unprobable that the UN inspectors will find them. But the US should release their evidences (e.g. I´m sure they´ve some pictures from spy satellites) asap. Although I´m sure that the German government has never actively supported Iraq, they´ve no counterproposals of disarming Iraq. They fear that America will take over Iraqi oil, and they want to satisfy the many pacifists.

Schröder is a dumb and silly leader. He stands alone in a corner surrounded by his fellow party-members and the Greens, but his people don´t trust him no longer.
