For the record. This letter to the editor appeared in Jan 24 "Bakersfield Californian":

Parra is no Dean Florez
This letter is in response to the Thomas Martinez's article contending Assemblywoman Nicole Parra deserves our support.

First of all, Martinez's blind allegiance to Parra clouds his judgment on reality regarding Parra's election.

The 30th Assembly District was made more Democratic through redistricting. Dean Florez won in 1998 by beating a Republican incumbent by almost 10 points. Florez won his re-election 2000 by 2-1, in a district that was less Democratic. Parra outspent her opponent by 10-1. Parra failed to appear at most of the forums so voters could hear what she stood for.

I'm sick and tired of people making excuses for Parra. She won by 265 votes in what is a safe Democratic district. Let's face it, her campaign was a disgrace and an embarrassment.

She talks about being a moderate and being like Florez. Nicole Parra is no Dean FLorez. She never will be and she should stop trying. FLorez understands his district. Parra never will.

Martinez and his group of apologists refuse to acknowledge these facts. If winning by 265 votes out of 50,000 votes cast speaks well for Parra's efforts in civic education, as Martinez wrote, then maybe I need to go back to school. When I go back, I'll make sure I don't take any classes from Thomas Martinez at Cal State Bakersfield.

MARIE HOWE, Bakersfield

Letter to the editor submitted 2/20/03 to the Bakersfield Californian for consideration to be printed:

R. Dale Speer's letter to the editor about how we should all shut up about Nicole Parra's big win is offensive. Parra's spending over $2 million to "win" that Assembly seat is nothing to be proud of. In addition, there are still allegations of voter fraud being investigated, and as if that weren't enough, the Parra's are suspected of using the California Highway Patrol as their own personal servants and water boys.

R. Dale Speer needs to get a clue. President Bush won by following the U.S. Constitution. Nicole Parra won by cheating, lying, and buying that seat, in my opinion, and in the opinion of thousands of others. We have a right to voice our heart-felt concerns.

By the way, Dean Gardner, the GOP nominee, is a Navy Veteran. For Nicole Parra to be appointed to chair the Assembly Veterans Affairs Committee is a slap in the face of every Veteran and a spit in the face of every voter who voted for Gardner.

We hope the voter fraud and CHP investigations will be allowed to continue unfettered by the Parra's tampering, interference and political shenanigans.

Sincerely,
Saundra Duffy

The CHP investigation is over and she's gonna skate, apparently. However, the voter fraud investigation continues and it ain't pretty. She may still have to vacate the Capitol. By the way, did you know she still has no district office? I think that's interesting. Thanks for your post, Sis. BTW - They're not gonna print my letter to the editor, obviously. Oh, well . . . For victory & freedom!!!
