I don't know if Boone was hated by the critics and rock'n'roll musicians because of his morals or because he absolutely murdered the R&B tunes he recorded (Ain't that a Shame and Tutti Frutti come to mind) and made into hits. Later in the fifties and early sixties he made some terrific ballad records, but the shame of those R&B covers is what established his negatory reputation.

Verrrrry interesting.
I suppose that if he re-released those songs, but added a track with a generous supply of four letter words, that he might be called a creative gutsy musical genius.
My point is that someone can put out bad stuff without being demonized, but why was he demonized for bad R&B?

Recording white horrible covers of R&B stuff was the practice of the day in the early and mid-50s, Pat Boone wasn't alone at that. But he was possibly the most successful at that and he projected a wholesome image, which contrasted with the rebel image of Elvis (who was really a momma's boy, as a matter of fact.) So in the end, it was Pat and not Teresa Brewer who came to symbolize the exploitation and the clumsy attempts of the recording industry (and the culture as a whole) to coopt what was then called "race music".

Say what you want about Ozzy, but even when he is zonked out on booze and drugs, his political views are 10 times more coherent than Sheryl Crow's. Thank God for the Bomb, indeed!!!
