It's also not like, "Oh, I forgot." They were warned by individuals to shut the door so the dog wouldn't get out. It was stupid, and not securing the dog SHOULD be a violation of Department Standard Operating Procedures. The "officer" didn't close the door precisely because the "perp" asked him to. It's all about their testosterone-fueled control fetish, and they're not about to do anything that would indicate any humanity or empathy whatsoever to their "collared" "perps." That's why the "officer" killed the dog the second he could draw a bead on it - not because he felt "threatened," which is a pathetic excuse. In his mind, he was just killing some scumbag perp's dog. THAT is SOP, and if they'd been able to dig a single marijuana seed out of that car (and trust me, they tried their damnedest), we'd have never heard about any of this. You are NOT innocent-until-proven-guilty in the mind of ANY cop who stops you for ANY reason. This poor dog was doomed the second its owner asked the pigs to show any semblence of humanity.

This dog story is getting old. It was unfortunate but sure doesn't warrant all the press. What a bunch of whiny Monday morning quaterbacks Americans have become. I am grateful for our police officers and the abuse they suffer. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Isn't he a piece of work?
Makes me wonder if he even has a dog, as he claims.

Move to Virginia. Shooting and killing someone's dog (unless it's running deer or harassing livestock) is a felony, and you can go to jail. That settles it. I had thought about it, and now I am. I love my Texas, but I'm returning to my ancestral home.

Wow.
There are TWO of us out there who aren't yet convinced that all cops are jack-booted thugs in search of vacationing families to terrorize and tail-wagging puppy dogs to shoot (sarcasm intended).

I am grateful for our police officers and the abuse they suffer. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.I'm sure if your family were pulled over and then held at gunpoint and your family pet was shot right in front of your children, all because of a overzealous busybody and some over-aggressive cops, you would will be saying the same thing.
"It's okay, son, stop crying, the police officers suffer enough abuse as it is, crying might make the one that laughed about it feel almost a little sad, and we can't have that happening, because they are police officers"

There are TWO of us out there who aren't yet convinced that all cops are jack-booted thugs in search of vacationing families to terrorize and tail-wagging puppy dogs to shoot"All" is a big number. I'm fairly convinced that MANY cops are jack-booted thugs, overcompensating for having been bullied in high-school, in search of some "perp," ANY "perp," to shove around and prove how bad-assed they are. I think that as far as "officer" Hall was concerned, all he was doing was killing some filthy "perp's" dog, so who cares? He's stated outright that AFTER HE FOUND OUT THE FAMILY WAS INNOCENT, he was "sorry" - so in other words, had they been guilty, or even charged with anything, a single marijuana seed, whatever, he wouldn't have cared, nor would any of us have ever heard about it. That suggests a prevailing and callous abuse of power, and in an ostensibly free society, that's a problem.

I think we're (almost) in agreement.
However, I wouldn't use the term "many."
"Some", or "a few" would be more appropriate when applying a label such as "jack-booted thugs."
But since we're applying labels, it appears from the postings I've read on this subject that there are MANY "cop-haters" out there.
I find that rather disturbing, regardless of the reason behind the vitriol. No question some cops overreach, and a very few do even worse.
But I'm also guessing MANY of these cop-hater types have seen the inside of a jail cell on one or more occasions for everything from drug use to weaving down the highway at .19 blood alcohol to slamming their spouse's head against the wall, and they think only the cop is to blame. They, of course, are just average guys who were victimized by one of those jack-booted thugs.
As is often the case, there are two (or more) sides to every story.

I'm one of those who've seen the inside of a jail. Several times. (In my troubled youth) EVERY time I was arrested, the cops were professional, and correct in their actions. I think, like all professions, a vast majority of all cops do a good, honest job. This particular cop is not in that group. He is a big southern dummy with an inferiority complex, and deserves whater bad comes his way from this.
Before I get flamed, I know many southern folk who aren't big southern dummies. Hell, I live in Texas. This guy would've been an ass, no matter where he grew up.

The cops in this article sound ALOT like New York state troopers from Troop F. (Orange County)

"I started backing up yelling at the top of my lungs for the dog to get back. As I drew my weapon I was in grave fear of this animal. " He's certainly got that story down pat.
To: Oztrich Boy
I noticed that too, and in the other one he got the kids to leave before he wasted it..must have been another immediate threat..is "animal control" one of his other duties?
To: Oztrich Boy
"A dog, I believe to be a pit-bull, jumped from the suspect vehicle, singled me out from the other officers, and charged toward me growling in an aggressive manner, Hall described." Do we have a whole nation who are literally scared to death of any dog that even resembles a Pit Bull?
This is getting totally whacky.
A nation of effing p*ssies. Beam me up, Scotty.

I agree with your statement about shooting a K-9.Just suppose you were pulled over like the Smoaks were and a police dog was sic'ed on you. In the act of defending yourself, you injured or killed the dog.The cops would expect more than an apology and a family investigation into the incident where you were found not guilty of excessive or justified deadly force.

"I am grateful for our police officers and the abuse they suffer. "
I'm not. They get little abuse, and if so it is usually verbal, but who doesn't get verbal abuse, and they kill without mercy.
Cops are nothing but sissified report takers who like to kill dogs and shoot unarmed people.
Cops are far more in love with their guns than the citizens they are paid to protect.
It is time we ended the militarization of our police.

"In my troubled youth"
In my youth I never went to jail, but I saw a cop or two. All were professional, but, as you said, that was in my youth, many years ago, and not today. Today, we have a very different mindset within our police forces.

"effing p*ssies"
That's all cops seem to be, isn't it. Little girls afraid of their own shadow and armed enough and willing to shoot at it, or us.

How about false arrest? Emotional trauma for the family? Loss of esteem in the community? Loss of consort? If you do not know what loss of consort means, then do not tell us that only the dog is involved.
